Tax Workshop for Non-Resident Aliens
Income Tax Workshop
A tax workshop for those filing non-resident alien tax returns will be held February 20, 2009, 3 pm – 5 pm, in the New UC - Harris Room, Room 2.212. It will be presented by the Office of Payroll and the Office of International Programs.
All F-1 and J-1 visa holders are required by law to file Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form 8843, whether they have earned money in the U. S. or not. Failure to properly file these forms each year can cause immigration problems.
Deadlines for submitting tax returns:
If you earned U.S.-source income during 2008: April 15, 2009
If you did not earn any U.S.-source income during 2008: June 15, 2009
Tax forms will be available in both the Office of Payroll (University Heights Building) and the Office of International Programs (MB 1.210). Information will be provided on how to complete these forms during the workshop. If you are unable to make it to this workshop, and need tax forms or assistance, here are some resources for you:
- Non-resident tax forms: Available at Payroll Office (University Heights) and at Office of International Programs (Main Building).
- Online tax information, including sample forms and how to complete them, are available on the UT-Austin International Office web site, at www.utexas.edu/international/taxes/ . You can also find the forms on the Internal Revenue Service web site, www.irs.gov.
If you do not file your tax return by the deadline, you can still file but you will have to pay a penalty.
