Over the course of his 25-year higher education career, Steve Wilkerson, Ph.D., has a wide range of experience including academic advising, learning assistance, strategic planning, assessment, and institutional research. Dr. Wilkerson earned his doctorate in Educational Administration – Higher Education from Texas A&M University, as well as baccalaureate and master’s degrees in biology from The University of Texas at San Antonio. As a first-generation college student, his primary research interest is in the area of student success. His teaching interests include program evaluation, research design, and administration.

Brian Cordeau earned his Bachelor’s degree in Computing Science at Sam Houston State University and his Master’s degree in Sociology from The University of Texas at San Antonio.  Brian joined the Office of Institutional Research in 2005 and has served in various capacities since then.  Prior to joining UTSA he was in Institutional Research at Sam Houston State University. His areas of interest are data management, reporting, computer programming and report automation.

Salma Ferdous joined the Office of Institutional Research in 2006 and has served in several job roles since then.  Prior to joining UTSA she was in Institutional Research at University of Houston- Downtown. Salma earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s in Physics from University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. She also earned Master’s in Electrical Engineering from Prairie View A & M University, Texas. Her career started in technical area but her affection in academia brought her into higher education institutions. Salma has twelve years of experience with data, research, and analysis and currently responsible for all THECB (Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board) reports for UTSA.


Dr. Jinny Case

Dr. Jinny Case has worked in the Office of Institutional Research as a Senior Institutional Research Analyst since 2013.  Prior to her position in Institutional Research, Jinny was part of the Graduation Initiative team at UTSA from 2007 to 2013. Her career in higher education spans twelve years, starting as a student success professional at Northwest Vista College.  Her experience with data, research, and analytics also includes work at the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio and the U.S. Census Bureau.  She is a three-time graduate of UTSA, having earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Sociology along with her doctoral degree in Applied Demography.


Dr. Mahmoud Abunawas

Dr. Mahmoud Abunawas holds a Ph.D. and a graduate certificate in Advanced Research Methods from Texas A&M University College Station. Prior to his current appointment, he was a full time faculty member Texas A&M University where he taught a variety of courses.  He also worked for several years as a consultant for a number organizations and companies providing several research and statistical analysis.


Fikrewold Bitew

Fikrewold Bitew has worked in the Office of Institutional Research as Institutional Research Analyst since 2016. Prior to joining UTSA he was Institutional Researcher at Dallas County Community College District and a Population Research-Data Analytics expert for Center for Disease Control (CDC) projects. Fikrewold earned his Bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics & Statistics and Master’s degree in Population Studies from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. Currently, he is pursuing his PhD in Applied Demography at UTSA. His research interests are data science and population research.

 

 

 


Dr. Elizabeth Hoff

Dr. Elizabeth Hoff has worked in the Office of Institutional Research as an Institutional Research Analyst II since 2016. Prior to her position in Institutional Research, Elizabeth worked as a graduate research fellow and Psychology instructor at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. She has additional experience in psychoeducational assessment, consultation, and intervention. Elizabeth earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Spanish at Trinity University and went on to attain her Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Developmental Psychology from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, where she completed minors in Educational Psychology and Research Methods.

Jason Purcell joined the Office of Institutional Research in 2017. Prior to his position in Institutional Research, Jason worked as a Data Analyst for Bexar County Juvenile Probation and Research Coordinator for Pearson. Jason earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s in Psychology from The University of Texas at San Antonio.


Dr. Lauren Apgar

Dr. Lauren Apgar joined the Office of Institutional Research in 2017 to focus on UTSA enrollment services. Lauren received her PhD and MA in Sociology from Indiana University and her BA from Southwestern University. As a graduate research fellow for Indiana University’s Sociological Research Practicum, she oversaw research design, data collection, and analysis on projects related to higher education, health care management, political attitudes, and immigrant employment. She also worked as Research Coordinator for several nonprofit organizations on community needs assessments and program evaluation studies.
