Lancy Scholars Program

The UTSA Lancy Scholars Program offers the opportunity for exceptional students to participate in original research focused around the interdisciplinary theme of understanding health disparities in the Texas-Mexico border region. Faculty mentors from a variety of departments will work together with students during summer 2007 on projects related to factors that impact the health of Mexican Americans in the Texas-Mexico border region. Students’ research projects will be designed to enhance our understanding of the social, biological, and behavioral factors underlying health disparities that have a negative impact on Mexican Americans.

Eight undergraduate students will be selected as Lancy Scholars to participate in the program. The program begins during the May mini-mester when students enroll in an Honors Seminar (HON 3223.01M) entitled “Understanding Health Disparities.” The Seminar will be taught by Dr. Tina Zawacki of the Department of Psychology. Students will continue their research projects for a period of 8 weeks, following the Seminar course. The program will culminate with the Honors College Undergraduate Research Sympoisum, where participants will present the results of their summer research projects. This Symposium will serve as practice for the participants, as they will be expected to present their work at the 2008 National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in San Rafael, California (in the San Francisco Bay Area).

Each student will receive a stipend of $3,000 as well as funding for travel to the 2008 NCUR Conference. Students and their mentors will have access to $300 for research expenses. All the project participants will form an active learning community, working together on campus, conducting the research related to their project, meeting in weekly lunch sessions, and going on outings together. Lancy Scholars will also frequently share their work to draw upon the variety and diversity of each student's academic background.

Applications must be submitted by March 20, 2007. Interested students should submit a completed application form with the attached essay detailing how their participation in the program will advance their academic objectives. Applicants should also ask one faculty member to send a letter of recommendation separately to Dr. Ann Eisenberg via campus mail (to the Honors College) or e-mail Dr. Ann Eisenberg at: ann.eisenberg@utsa.edu. Students selected will be notified no later than March 25, 2007
