The NIH/NIGMS-Funded
MBRS-RISE (Minority Biomedical Research Support
- Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement)
program is designed to assist underrepresented students to attain their
doctoral degrees and launch into successful careers in the Biomedical and
Chemical Sciences. The UTSA grant consists of two components,
Freshman/Sophomore RISE which reaches students as they begin their
undergraduate studies, and Ph.D. RISE which supports doctoral education.
Our grant now supports a total of 15 students in 5
Ph.D. programs: Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer
Science and Physics. RISE Ph.D. students receive
financial support, mentoring, travel funding for conferences, and
professional development training. In addition, we have recently deepened the
program to provide training in grant writing and leadership. We are
excited about these additions and look forward to assisting additional
underrepresented doctoral students to launch into a successful scientific
career and attain their lifetime goals.
