Set Up a Network Printer
Follow these steps to set up a network printer on your Mac. These instructions are for Mac users running Snow Leopard and Leopard Mac OS (10.5 or higher):
- Open Print and Fax from the System Preferences pane. If the pane is locked, click the lock icon and authenticate to make changes.
- Click the plus sign above the lock icon to add a printer.
- With the Default icon selected, look for your print server and printer queue name in the list. (Examples: BARTHOLOMEW-PARA01Q, THOMAS-ZETER04Q, etc.) To save time, begin typing the print server's name into the search field until you see possible matches. Select the printer queue name when it appears in the list. Click Add.
- If you found the printer queue name, skip to Step 5. If the printer queue does not appear, follow these steps:
- Select the Advanced icon on the toolbar. Note: To add the Advanced icon, control-click the toolbar and select Customize Toolbar:
- Drag and drop the Advanced icon on the toolbar, then click Done.
- Select the Advanced icon and wait for the pop-up menu titles to be displayed. Click the Type pop-up menu and select Windows.
- Enter the URL for the printer in the URL field. The URL should be: smb://Machine/Printer where Machine is the printer server name (such as THOMAS) and Printer is the name of the printer queue (such as OKAT1Q). If you are unfamiliar with the printer server name or are unsure which software to select, please contact OITConnect.
- Enter a name for the printer in the Name field such as "Main Office Printer."
- Enter a location description for the printer in the Location field, if desired.
- Choose the default driver, generic postscript driver, or other driver in the Print Using: pop-up menu. The "Select a driver to use..." option lets you access installed printer drivers. (If you are unfamiliar with the print server name, or if you are unsure of which software to select for the Print Using: pop-up menu, please contact OITConnect.)
- When the correct software has been selected, click Add.
- Drag the printer icon from the list in the Print and Fax Preference pane window to your desktop to create a desktop printer (optional).
- Double-click the printer icon from the list in the Print and Fax Preference pane to launch the designated printer's queue application and then choose Print test page from the Printer menu to confirm that the print configuration is working.
- If the print test job remains in the queue and the message "On Hold (Authentication required)" appears, it is possible that your myUTSA ID (abc123) and password will have to be entered and saved into the keychain.
- To authenticate, click Resume at the top of the window, then enter your credentials when prompted.
- The Name field should be entered in this format: utsarr/abc123 where "abc123" is your myUTSA ID. The Remember this password selection in my keychain should be checked. Click OK to complete the test print.
