VPN Recommendations

Strongly Recommended

The Office of Information Technology strongly recommends you complete the following before using the VPN:

  1. Any machine connecting to the UTSA network via the VPN is required to be fully updated. Please use personal computers only while using the VPN.
    • OS Updates for Windows: Visit the Windows Update page to apply the latest critical patches.
    • OS Updates for Macintosh: Check for software updates regularly for the latest Mac OS updates.
    • Software Updates: Every user should verify all their software is up-to-date.

  2. Install and use anti-virus software on any machine connecting to the UTSA network via the VPN and keep the software up-to-date.

    • UTSA provides free anti-virus software (via ASAP) to faculty and staff for personal use (for Windows 2000 and XP machines only).

  3. Windows Vista Users: Windows Vista users should utilize the Web VPN (SSL) connection in place of the download VPN client.
  4. Accessing sensitive data*: Faculty and staff who access sensitive data from a personal computer are required to use the VPN.

*To find out if you are handling sensitive data, refer to the Information Security Data Classification Standard or contact the Information Security Office.

Other Recommendations

The Office of Information Technology recommends you complete the following before using the VPN:

  1. Install and use a personal firewall on any machine connecting to the UTSA network via the VPN.
  2. Install and use anti-malware software to check your computer for adware and spyware.
  3. For Windows Vista users downloading VPN software: If upgrading to MS Windows Vista from MS Windows XP, please uninstall all versions of UTSA's VPN client from your computer. Install Windows Vista and then proceed to reinstall the latest VPN client after MS Windows Vista® has been installed.

For questions on connecting to or using the VPN, please contact OIT Support Services (Help Desk).
