Anti-Virus Software
UTSA has a site license for Microsoft Forefront anti-virus software products for UTSA-owned PCs.
Macintosh users should follow instructions at the bottom of this page - see the Anti-virus for UTSA-owned Macintosh computers section.
Free Anti-Virus Software for Home Computers
Forefront anti-virus software is available for home use for PCs owned by students, faculty and staff.
UTSA students, faculty and staff can download Forefront anti-virus software via ASAP:
- Log in to ASAP.
- On the main page click the Software Downloads tab.
- Click the Forefront Anti-virus link.
- Once downloaded, follow the instructions in the wizard.
Microsoft Forefront anti-virus software (UTSA-owned Windows-based computers)
McAfee VirusScan anti-virus software (for Windows-based computers) was replaced in March 2010 with Microsoft Forefront Anti-Virus. Microsoft Forefront displays your PC system health using a set of icons. The color of the icon denotes the status of virus checking on your PC.

Status Good / Scan in Progress. The first icon signifies that no threats have been identified. The second icon shows that your PC is currently being scanned. There is no need to contact OITConnect if you see either of these icons.

Anti-virus Software for Macintosh Computers
Step One: Uninstall previous anti-virus software:
UTSA Macintosh users should uninstall McAfee VirusScan or Virex from their system by August 2010, as the McAfee site license will expire on August 31.
If you have VirusScan or Virex anti-virus software present on your Mac, you can download uninstallers for both Virex and VirusScan by downloading the uninstaller disk image (DMG).

ClamXav Installation for Mac OS X: 10.4, 10.5, 10.6
Once you have uninstalled all other anti-virus applications, you can install ClamXav 2.0. ClamXav is an open-source anti-virus application that is supported by OIT. ClamXav also can be installed on your personally-owned Mac.
- Download the latest version of ClamXav for OS X 10.4 - 10.6 (Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard) at http://www.clamxav.com.
- Open the "ClamXav.dmg" file from your Downloads folder and drag the ClamXav icon to the Applications folder.
- Note: If you are running Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), you must restart your computer and log in again to complete the ClamXav installation process. Skip to the Using ClamXav section.
- If you are running Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or 10.5 (Leopard), open the Go menu in Finder and select Home.
- Open the Library folder and find the “Contextual Menu Items” folder. If it does not exist, create it.
- Drag the file ScanWithClamXav.plugin from the installer window to the Contextual Menu Items folder.
- Restart your Mac and log in again.

Complete the ClamXav Installation
- Open ClamXav from your Applications folder.
- Upon launching ClamXav for the first time you will be prompted to allow automatic updates. If prompted to authenticate, type in your username and password and click OK.
- A dialog box will be displayed. Click Install to set up the Clam Anti-Virus engine.
- When the ClamAV Scanning Engine installer window appears, click Continue.
- Click Continue again, and then click Agree to agree to the terms of the GNU General Public License.
- Click Install to begin the installation of the engine. Enter your username and ID, if prompted.
- Once the installation has been completed, click Close.
- Open the ClamXav icon from your applications folder. You will be prompted to update to the latest virus definitions. Click Update Now.

Initiate a Virus Scan
To initiate a virus scan of any file or folder, click Start Scan and choose the file or folder you wish to scan. You may also control-click (right-click) any file to initiate a scan.

Set Up a Daily Scan
To set up a daily scan, open Preferences in ClamXav and click the Schedule tab.

Using the dropdown menus, select the days/times when your automatic scan will run. Click (+) to choose which directories to scan. Click OK to save your preferences.
