Freshman | Fall Orientation Before You Attend Orientation

Required Items

  • Testing— TSI Status & Placement Exams

  • Testing requirements vary on an individual basis depending on an incoming student’s initial Texas Success Initiative status (TSI) and major choice. A student can determine their testing status by logging into ASAP. Below is information regarding a student’s testing status for either TSI and/or placement exams:

    • TSI Testing Status Listed as “TSI Complete” (Exemptions)
      • If an incoming student has exemption level ACT or SAT test scores (please see exemption list at www.utsa.edu/testing) and is “TSI complete” then the student may or may not need to take a math placement test prior to course registration. Students whose major choice requires, pre-calculus and or calculus may wish to take a math placement in order to fulfill the prerequisite required for those registration choices.
    • TSI Testing Status Listed as “TSI Needed”
      • “TSI Needed” means UTSA has not yet received a student’s TSI scores or has received incomplete scores.
      • UTSA needs new student’s TSI scores well in advance of their orientation date (two weeks prior) for the university to process in time for course registration during orientation.
      • Student’s must send written authorization to UTSA Testing Services so that individual TSI scores may be accessed and downloaded.
      • In accordance with Texas state law, “TSI Needed” students must take a Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA) and then a TSI exam in order to have scores in the UTSA student system prior to orientation for course registration to occur.
      • The PAA is available through an online module at the following link https://www.tsipreview.com/welcome/ut-sanantonio and must be completed prior to registration for the UTSA TSI exam.
      • “TSI Needed” students who do not reside locally may consider testing at a college or university near their home. Options for taking TSI at another institution: (1) a student can take a TSI at another school and request that official scores be sent to UTSA or (2) a student could request a remote TSI exam.
      • Students taking the TSI exam at another institution must send the official scores to the UTSA as soon as testing is complete.
    • Placement Exams - Math and/or Chemistry
      • Math and Chemistry placement exams are for students who are “TSI complete” and who are seeking placement in higher level math or chemistry courses in accordance with their major and or graduation track plans, please review your unique needs with your advisor or on-line prior to registering for one of these exams. Practice exams are available for the math placement at: www.utsa.edu/cos/math. Practice exam information for chemistry placement is available at: www.utsa.edu/testing. It is vital that all students who are thinking about taking a math or chemistry placement exam, review the practice and or study information prior to attempting the exams due to the fact that chemistry may be attempted only once every two years and math placement allows just two attempts. Please come prepared to do your best. The math placement exam only allows the use of a four-function, nonprogrammable calculator, therefore no graphing or scientific calculators are allowed please do not attempt the practice exams using any calculator higher than the type allowed on the actual exam for true measurement of your ability and preparedness.
