This week, I delivered my annual State of the University address to our faculty, staff and students, reflecting on our accomplishments over the past year and offering an assessment of our progress as we move toward designation as a Tier One university.
To put it simply, UTSA has never been in better shape. Our students come from among the top-ranked in their high school graduating classes. Our faculty come from some of the most esteemed universities in the world. The research we have underway is producing groundbreaking discoveries that will improve the quality of life.
Cybersecurity and brain health are two areas where we are receiving peer recognition for our leadership. To keep these two important research areas at the top of their game, I announced plans to hire six new cybersecurity researchers, and an endowed professor to lead our brain health initiative. This is in addition to the three new brain health researchers who joined us this fall.
UTSA conducted more than $83 million in research and sponsored programs this past year, and the academic community is taking notice. Times Higher Education has once again ranked us among the top 400 universities in the world and in the top 100 in the United States.
Just a few weeks ago, U.S. News and World Report ranked UTSA number 79 among American public academic institutions. Of the 1,000 universities in 60 countries that it evaluated, UTSA was ranked number 444 worldwide.
To keep our momentum going, I introduced Blueprint UTSA, our strategic plan to carry us into next year and beyond. This is an ambitious initiative, rooted in a commitment to excellence. We will continue to focus on student success, recruitment of world-class faculty, community service, increased esteem and recognition, and putting in place an infrastructure to keep us on the path to Tier One.
2017 is going to be an exciting year at UTSA, thanks to your continuing support. For all you do for our university and its students, mil gracias!
President, The University of Texas at San Antonio
