This week, we begin another exciting academic year at UTSA. I’m looking forward to welcoming nearly 3,500 freshmen -- the Class of ’17 -- more than 1,900 transfer students and more than 60 new faculty members, one of the largest groups of new faculty in recent memory. These new professors are bringing their amazing talent from universities worldwide and contributing to UTSA’s progress toward Tier One status.
Tier One isn’t just about the university. It’s about ensuring that excellence and innovation thrive at UTSA and in San Antonio. Our faculty members, now totaling more than 1,400, play a major role in this endeavor through teaching, research and community outreach. Attracting these expert scholars and researchers from a range of fields helps us prepare exceptional leaders and ensures a strong future for our graduates and our city.
We also have some important programs to help support this work. This year, the Texas Legislature approved new funding for UTSA through the Texas Competitive Knowledge Fund, which will support teaching excellence and research. Renewed support from the Texas Research Incentive Program (TRIP) will match private gifts to the university. The result is our increased ability to recruit outstanding faculty, provide graduate fellowships and build research capacity in all of our eight colleges.
As they learn from the best, our students will specialize in the knowledge and technology of the future that will help them make a difference in our community and the world.
At the heart of everything we do at UTSA is the belief that the people of Texas deserve exceptional opportunities in higher education. With the efforts of our faculty and other members of the UTSA community, we are well on our way to fulfilling the promise of top-tier opportunities for a top-tier city.
Welcome back to our returning students, faculty, staff and friends, and a very special welcome goes to our new students and professors! Together, we will keep UTSA moving toward Tier One.
