Amazing things are happening at UTSA as we continue to hit major milestones on our path to Tier One status. And every milestone we reach is having a ripple effect on San Antonio.
Last week, nearly 4,400 UTSA students walked the stage at our first Commencement ceremonies in the Alamodome. These students are now turning the exceptional education opportunities they had at UTSA into leadership roles as business executives… or starting new companies… or making new scientific discoveries… all right here in San Antonio. I am so proud of our graduates and all they are doing to contribute to the success and prosperity of our city.
Also this month, we received another major recognition in our advancement to top-tier status. The Academic Ranking of World Universities by Shanghai Jiao Tong University has named UTSA as one of the top 500 universities in the world in research, citations and performance. The Academic Ranking rates more than 1,200 universities in 43 countries globally, and UTSA is one of only 150 U.S. universities to make the list. This achievement, along with our ranking in Times Higher Education as one of the world’s top 100 universities under 50 years old, is an acknowledgement that UTSA is among the most respected institutions in education.
Another significant step is reaching our initial financial goal of $120 million in UTSA’s inaugural capital campaign, two years ahead of schedule. The tremendous support we have received from the San Antonio community has given us the momentum to increase our Tier One capital campaign reach to $175 million by August 2015. Every gift we receive will make a real difference in supporting graduate students, recruiting top undergraduates, supporting faculty research and building state-of-the-art athletics facilities.
I am confident that we will meet and surpass our goals because San Antonio has always been extremely generous to us.
Our top-tier city certainly deserves a top-tier university, and I am so grateful for all you do to help UTSA and our city receive the recognition they deserve.
