Activity Area Policies
Please review all the Activity Area Policies. Below are the areas the campus rec hosts activities for our patrons.
T-Shirt Policy

  • Patrons must wear shoes in the facility and are required to wear close toed athletic rubber-soled shoes in the activity areas. Non-marking soles are to be worn on the hardwood floors. Patrons must minimally wear a shirt that does not have an arm hole that is larger than one fist below the arm pit and covers the midriff. Shorts/pants must be worn at the waist.


1. All Campus Recreation Facilities

  • UTSA Campus Recreation strives to conduct all activities in the most prudent manner possible.  However, due to the inherent risk of injury in any activity, it is the responsibility of each participant to be aware there are some assumed risks involved in participation.  All participants are strongly urged to have a yearly medical examination and to carry medical insurance coverage.  UTSA and its staff are not responsible for injuries, including death.
  • Patrons must wear shoes in the facility and are required to wear close toed athletic rubber-soled shoes in the activity areas.  Non-marking soles are to be worn on the hardwood floors. Patrons must minimally wear a shirt that does not have an arm hole that is larger than one fist below the arm pit and covers the midriff. Shorts/pants must be worn at the waist.
  • Tobacco, gum and alcohol products are prohibited in all Campus Rec facilities.
  • Patrons may consume food and beverage in designated lounges, on the pool deck and at the outdoor venues.  Water in bottles may be consumed in all areas of the facility.
  • Facility equipment and furnishings should not to be taken from the facility without the approval of the Associate Director of Operations.
  • Poster and fliers to be placed in the Campus Recreation facilities will be approved and posted by the Marketing staff.
  • Use of Cameras and Video Equipment in all Campus Rec facilities is prohibited without the approval of UTSA and Campus Rec.
  • Individuals or groups using the Rec Center facilities and/or equipment are responsible for any damage to Campus Recreation property as a result of negligence or vandalism.  Repair costs will be charged to the individual (or in-charge individual for a group) as soon as these costs can be determined.  Individuals will be charged the replacement value for the equipment.
  • Campus Recreation and its staff are not responsible for the personal belongings of users.
  • Participants are asked to secure personal belongings.  Cubby holes are provided in several of the activity areas.  UTSA, Campus Recreation and its staff are not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged articles.
  • Coin operated lockers are for day use only.  Participants may not place their own lock on the coin-operated lockers.  Locks placed on the coin operated lockers will be cut-off at the end of each day.
  • Small lockers on the 2nd floor at the Main Campus Rec Center and the racquetball courts are for day use only, locks will be cut-off at the end of each day.
  • Projectiles (footballs, Frisbees, baseballs, lacrosse balls, etc.) are not allowed to be thrown in any of the indoor activity areas.
2. Weight Room, Cardiovascular and Ab/Core Areas
  • Patrons must wear shoes in the facility and are required to wear close toed athletic rubber-soled shoes in the activity areas.  Non-marking soles are to be worn on the hardwood floors. Patrons must minimally wear a shirt that does not have an arm hole that is larger than one fist below the arm pit and covers the midriff. Shorts/pants must be worn at the waist.
  • All patrons must checkout and use a workout towel in the weight rooms, cardio rooms, core area, track and studios.
  • Participants must wear closed-toe athletic shoes.

  • To avoid damaging the upholstery on machines, participants may not wear jeans/denim or cargo pants with multiple buttons or zippers.
  • Personal items such as back packs, skateboards, purses, clothing, basketballs and any items deemed trip hazards are not allowed in any activity areas.
  • To assist in maintaining a safe and sanitary facility, the use of cleaning towels and spray bottles are recommended before and after use to minimize the transmission of infections, as well as to extend the life-span of equipment. 
  • Food and drink are prohibited in the weight room or cardio areas. Water, in a re-sealable container, is allowed.
  • Please keep walkways open and avoid working out directly in front of the weight racks.
  • Collars are required for all barbell lifts.
  • Spotters are strongly recommended when lifting all free weights.
  • Please do not move or rearrange weights or equipment.
  • Do not remove weights or equipment from any cardio/weight room.
  • Please return weights, dumbbells and plates to their respective racks following use.
  • Please maintain control of your weights at all time.  For the prevention of injury to yourself or others, and/or damage to floor or equipment weights may not be dropped or thrown.
  • Only bumper plates are allowed to be used on the powerlifting platform.
  • Olympic lifts are to be completed on the platform only.
  • Cameras and camcorders are prohibited in the facility.
  • Personal Training may only be conducted by Campus Recreation personnel.  Failure to adhere may result in a facility suspension.
  • To avoid injury, please utilize exercise machines and equipment for its intended use.
  • To ensure a clean environment, as well as avoiding potential respiratory ailments to others, chalk is not permitted in facility.
  • Only authorized Campus Recreation staff members have access to the control desk and to operate the stereo, clock, phone, video, TV and computer equipment.
  • For the safety of yourself and others, do not stand on benches while exercising.
  • Weight benches may not be placed within 5 feet of fire exits or extinguishers.
  • Failure to comply with Campus Recreation policies may result in a loss of Campus Recreation privileges.
3. Gymnasium

  • The courts are available for a variety activities (basketball, volleyball and badminton)
  • Personal belongings are not allowed to be placed on the floor.
  • All participants must wear athletic non-marking rubber-soled shoes on the courts.  Street shoes, boots, sandals and flip-flops are not permitted.  Bare feet are not permitted.
  • Patrons must minimally wear a shirt that does not have an arm hole that is larger than one fist below the arm pit and covers the midriff.
  • Shorts/pants must be worn at the waist.
  • Food and drink are not allowed in the gymnasium area (water bottles are allowed).
  • Appropriate behavior is expected at all times.  Foul language is not permitted.
  • Dunking is permitted, however, users are asked to not hang on basketball rims.
  • During periods of high usage, the Campus Recreation staff may ask players to play half-court basketball to allow more patrons to participate.
  • Failure to adhere to Rec Center policies may result in a loss of Rec Center privileges.
4. Track

  • Users must wear closed-toe shoes: sandals, boots and flip-flops are not permitted.
  • Patrons must wear shoes in the facility and are required to wear close toed athletic rubber-soled shoes in the activity areas. Non-marking soles are to be worn on the hardwood floors. Patrons must minimally wear a shirt that does not have an arm hole that is larger than one fist below the arm pit and covers the midriff. Shorts/pants must be worn at the waist.
  • Walkers and slower runners are to use the outside lane.
  • Participants are asked to walk or jog in the direction indicated on the directional signals on the wall.
  • Bottle water is the only beverage allowed on the track.
  • No exercise equipment should be removed from any area and taken onto the track surface.
  • Failure to adhere to Rec Center policies may result in a loss of Rec Center privileges.
5. Lounge Spaces

  • Please do not rearrange the furniture.
  • Food and drink is allowed in these areas.  Please discard trash.
  • Appropriate behavior is expected at all times.  Foul language is not permitted.
  • Failure to adhere to Rec Center policies may result in a loss of Rec Center privileges.
6. Demonstration Kitchen

  • The Demonstration Kitchen is managed by the Fitness and Wellness Staff.
  • Users are only allowed in the area during a scheduled demonstration kitchen.
  • All equipment and supplies are to remain in the room.

7. Pool

  • Swimming is permitted only when a UTSA lifeguard is on duty.
  • Swimmers must wear a bathing suit.  Cut-offs, gym shorts, sport bras, thongs, underwear, compression shorts are not allowed.
  • Swimmers should shower before entering the water.
  • The UTSA Lifeguards on duty are the only individuals allowed to wear any type of lifeguard apparel.
  • No diving or flipping into the pool.
  • The use of alcoholic beverages or tobacco in any form is not allowed in any of the Campus Recreation facilities.
  • Chewing of gum or consuming food or beverage in the pool is not allowed.
  • Glass containers are not allowed in any of the Campus Recreation facilities.
  • Twist top beverages are the only type allowed on the island area.
  • Inappropriate language is not permitted.
  • Any conduct determined by the Aquatics Staff to jeopardize the health and safety of pool users is prohibited.  The Aquatic Staff has full authority to ask participants to leave the pool area for not following the policies outline for the area.
  • Rough play, horse play, chicken fights and throwing/pushing people into the pool is not permitted.  Do not hang on the lane lines or safety lines.
  • Do not hang on to the island walls.
  • No Running.
  • Enter/Exit the Island from designated locations only.
  • No splashing the Lifeguards.
  • Inner tubes are allowed only in the lazy river unless specified by the Aquatics staff.
  • Water basketballs, volleyballs and polo balls are only allowed in designated areas and are not to be used as floatation devices or thrown at patrons.  Sand volleyballs and outdoor basketballs are not permitted in the pool.
  • Spitting, urinating, blowing of the nose, spouting of water or deposit foreign matter in a pool shall be strictly prohibited.
  • No one is allowed on the lifeguard stands except the Aquatics staff.
  • Do not talk to the Lifeguard Staff in the stands unless you have an emergency.
  • Campus Recreation apparel polices apply when entering the Recreation Center prior to and after using the swimming pool area. The user should dry-off and be properly dressed before entering the facility.
  • Use of pool shall be prohibited during severe weather conditions, i.e. electrical storms, tornadoes, etc.
  • Persons having or reasonably suspected to have any considerable areas of exposed sub-epidermal tissue, cuts, or know or recognizable contagious or communicable diseases, cough, cold, open sore, blisters, bandaged wound, fever, inflammation of the eyes, nasal or ear discharges, shall not be allowed to enter the pool water.
8. Campus Rec Field Complex

  • The field complex is available for use by UTSA students, faculty and staff.
  • Reservations may be made by Registered Student organizations, UTSA Offices and co-sponsored organizations.  Reservation forms are located in the reservation section of the Campus Recreation website.
  • Individuals may only use the field when the gates are open, trespassers will be prosecuted.
  • Patrons must wear shoes in the facility and are required to wear close toed athletic rubber-soled shoes in the activity areas.  Closed toe athletic shoes are required for participation. No metal spikes are allowed on the FieldTurf. Patrons must minimally wear a shirt that does not have an arm hole that is larger than one fist below the arm pit and covers the midriff. Shorts/pants must be worn at the waist.
  • Participants must ear closed toed athletic shoes.
  • Outside guests are permitted only with a UTSA escort.
  • Alcohol, drugs, tobacco, fire arms and weapons are not allowed.
  • Pets are not allowed; even pets on a leash or being held.
  • Please dispose of trash in the trash cans provided.
  • Vandalism to property, equipment or the fields will not be tolerated.  These actions will possibly lead to Police and/or University action.
  • Players, spectators and coaches are required to exhibit good sporting conduct.  The use of profanity, racial, sexist or other intimidating actions or words directed at staff, officials, coaches, players or spectators will not be tolerated and will lead to your removal from the Rec Fields area.

  • The following are NOT permitted on the FieldTurf at any time:

  • NO food

  • NO drinks (Water is allowed and encouraged)

  • NO gum

  • NO sunflower seeds

  • NO shelled nuts

  • NO tobacco

  • NO smoking

  • NO glass containers

  • NO metal cleats

  • NO pets

  • NO chairs of any kind
9. Outdoor Check-Out and Resource Center

  • Equipment may only be check-in and -out during Resources Center hours.
  • All Rec Center members are eligible to use the Resource Center.
  • Patrons must complete and sign an Outdoor Equipment Check-Out Agreement.
  • Patrons must sign a Check-Out Form (completed by staff) each time equipment is checked out.
  • Patrons may each check out equipment to outfit one person.
  • All equipment must be returned on time and in good condition.
  • Fees will be assessed if equipment is returned late, damaged, wet or excessively dirty.
  • Patron will be charged the cost of replacement for equipment which is lost or irreparably damaged.
  • Failure to adhere to Outdoor Equipment Check-Out policies may result in a loss of privileges.
10. Open Rec Equipment Check-out

  • Users must show their UTSA/Campus Rec Card to check out equipment.
  • Users are responsible for equipment they check out.  An individual who fails to return equipment or who returns damaged equipment must pay the cost of replacement value to replace the lost, stolen, or damaged equipment.
  • If a patron plans to transfer equipment to another member, both patrons must be present to record the switch.
  • Payment for lost, stolen or damaged equipment may be made at the Membership Services Desk.  The users account will be suspended until restitution is made. After 30 days an academic hold will be placed on the users account through fiscal services.
11. MAC Gym

  • The courts are available for a variety activities (basketball, indoor soccer and floor hockey)
  • Personal belongings are not allowed to be placed on the floor.
  • All participants must wear athletic non-marking rubber-soled shoes on the courts.  Street shoes, boots, sandals and flip-flops are not permitted.  Bare feet are not permitted on court floors.
  • Patrons must wear shoes in the facility and are required to wear close toed athletic rubber-soled shoes in the activity areas.  Non-marking soles are to be worn on the hardwood floors. Patrons must minimally wear a shirt that does not have an arm hole that is larger than one fist below the arm pit and covers the midriff. Shorts/pants must be worn at the waist.

12. Studios

  • Place all belongings (bags, keys, towels and water bottles) in a designated storage area in the studio. 
  • Patrons must wear shoes in the facility and are required to wear close toed athletic rubber-soled shoes in the activity areas. Non-marking soles are to be worn on the hardwood floors. Patrons must minimally wear a shirt that does not have an arm hole that is larger than one fist below the arm pit and covers the midriff. Shorts/pants must be worn at the waist.
  • For cycling classes, you are REQUIRED to have a towel and a water bottle.  All classes REQUIRE a towel that can be checked out from the Membership Services Desk.
  • Entry to classes is on a first come, first served basis. Each studio has a maximum capacity, which varies depending on class format, to provide the safest environment possible. Once the maximum number of participants has entered the class, the class will then be closed.
  • Participants may enter a class until 10 minutes after start time. After ten minutes or the end of the warm-up period, the class is closed to prevent injuries.
  • Campus Recreation reserves the right to adjust the schedule when necessary.
  • Please take all classes at your own pace and work at your own level.
  • If you are in the studio at the time of a class, you must be participating in that class.
  • Ensure that all your equipment is cleaned and put in the proper place before leaving the class.
  • After class make sure you collect all of your belongings and leave the studio as you found it.
  • Failure to comply with Campus Recreation policies may result in a loss of Campus Recreation privileges.
  • HAVE FUN!
13. Meeting Rooms

  • Meeting rooms are kept locked unless reserved.
  • Reservations are made through the Associate Director of Operations.

  • Food or drink is only allowed if pre-approved.
  • Please do not rearrange the tables and chairs.
  • Failure to adhere to Rec Center policies may result in a loss of Rec Center privileges.
14. Rockwall

  • Patrons must wear shoes in the facility and are required to wear close toed athletic rubber-soled shoes in the activity areas. Non-marking soles are to be worn on the hardwood floors. Patrons must minimally wear a shirt that does not have an arm hole that is larger than one fist below the arm pit and covers the midriff. Shorts/pants must be worn at the waist.
  • All patrons must sign a "Release and Indemnification Agreement".
  • All patrons must check in with Outdoor Pursuits staff and present ID before climbing.
  • All patrons must pass a belay test before their fourth regular visit.
  • After passing a belay test you will be supervised as a "Beginner Belayer" for your next 5 visits to the wall.
  • Lead climbing will be limited and subject to additional certification
  • No un-roped climbing above the height of the top-most holds on the bouldering wall. No "topping out" on the bouldering wall.
  • All climbers must use UIAA approved equipment. Belays must be anchored.
  • Only rock climbing shoes or running/athletic shoes will be permitted in climbing area. No bare feet.
  • The climbing area is limited to 15 climbers and belayers in total. Others may observe from outside the area.
  • No radios, cell phones, food or drink allowed in the climbing area.
  • The Rock Wall staff has the responsibility to ask patrons whose behavior is in violation of Rock Wall policies to leave the facility.
  • Privileges will be revoked if you attempt to climb while intoxicated.
  • Unsafe wall conditions should be reported to the Rock Wall staff immediately.
  • Rockwall Points of Etiquette:
    • All eyes should be on the lookout for safety concerns. Spot thy neighbor!
    • Spotting is strongly recommended for all bouldering at the Rock Wall.
    • Stand clear of climbers' fall and swing zones.
    • The first person off the ground (bouldering) has the 'right of way'.
    • Do not attempt to pass another climber by climbing above them.
15. Spas
  • All bathers, before entering the spa, shall be required to take a cleansing shower bath.
  • Spitting, urinating, blowing of the nose, spouting of water or deposit of foreign matter in a spa shall be strictly prohibited.
  • Maximum use 15 minutes
  • Bathing load: 22 persons per spa.
  • Any person suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs shall be prohibited from entering the spa.
  • Maximum water temperature is 104 o F.
  • Animals with the exception of guide animals for the handicap shall be prohibited within the spa area.
  • The spa shall not be operated during severe weather conditions, i.e. electrical storms, tornadoes, etc.
  • Pregnant women, small children, people with health problems and people using alcohol, narcotics or other drugs that cause drowsiness should not use the spa without first consulting a doctor.
  • Oils, body lotions, and minerals or materials not associated with chemicals used for water chemistry balance, algae control, and disinfection of the water are prohibited in the spa.
  • Only enter feet first by way of the steps.  NO DIVING
