Texas Senator Judith Zaffirini will be the 2007 Fall Convocation keynote speaker. Senator Zaffirini represents the 21st Senatorial District and began the 80th Legislative Session (2007) and her 21st year in the Senate as the second highest-ranking Texas state senator, the highest-ranking woman and Hispanic senator, and the highest-ranking senator for Bexar County and the border region.

Fall Convocation will take place mon Monday, August 20th in the 1604-Campus Recreation Center from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Cultural Connections

Cultural Connections are receptions for the University community as represented by the Provost, Faculty, Staff, and Student Leaders to welcome new and transfer students who make up the University of Texas at San Antonio’s diverse population. These include our African American and Black students, Latino/a and Hispanic students, Gay-Lesbian-Bisexual-Transgender-Questioning students, Asian and Pacific Islander students, and students with disabilities.

There will be a short program at each reception consisting of a welcome, a short activity, brief remarks from a faculty or staff member, and student presentation(s). After the program, light will refreshments will be served and students will have an opportunity to browse information tables and interact/network with other students, faculty, staff, student organizations and departments.

What is the goal of Cultural Connections?
The goal of these receptions is to get new students connected to returning students, faculty, staff and student organizations to begin networking and building a community of friends, peers, colleagues and mentors.

When are the receptions?
The receptions will be held following the schedule below:

Monday August 20, 2007

Tuesday August 21, 2007

  • Students with Disabilities

  • Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender/Questioning (GLBTQ)

  • 1 p.m. - 2 p.m.
  • Black and African American
  • Location: TBA
  • 3 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Who will be attending?
All new students who have self identified as a member of one or more of the above mentioned groups will be specially invited. Other students are also invited to attend.

I did not receive an invitation, but I am a new student, I identify with at least one of the groups and I want to attend the event(s). What should I do?
All new students who self identified on their application were invited. If you would like to attend any of these receptions, please arrive at the date and time listed.

What should I wear to the event?
We ask that all new students wear casual attire.

Can I invite my family to this event?
While we do encourage your family’s involvement in your educational experience, at this time we cannot accommodate families or friends who are not UTSA students.

Dive into the UC

As you "prepare to take off" this semester, we want you to land at the UC! The University Center offers First-Class Services and plenty of elbow room. Stop by and get your passport for information. Visit the various offices in the UC for more information about the services they provide and earn a bag, great prizes, catch a movie, sing a song, learn a dance, play some games and find your landing pad.

Alumni Programs, Career Services, Chartwells, Counseling Services, Orientation & Transition Programs, Special Events, Student Activities, Student Judicial Affairs, Student Life, Tomas Rivera Center, UTSA Bookstore, and Your University Center welcome you to your campus living room for food, fun, and games before the semester starts! Stop by and visit the various offices for more information about the services they provide and earn a Dive Into the UC backpack!

  • Paper Airplane Contest hosted by Alumni Programs, Career Services, and Student Judicial Affairs in the Retama Galleria

  • Games provided by Your University Center under the stairs across from the Bookstore


4 p.m. - 6 p.m. : West Wing

  • FREE taste-testing and food provided by Chartwells in the UC Grill

  • Karaoke, Name That Tune Contest & Dance Workshop provided by Your University Center in the Ski Lodge

  • Parachute Men Drop Contest hosted by the Tomas Rivera Center in the Ski Lodge

6 p.m. - 8 p.m.

  • Movie: Snakes on a Plane with FREE popcorn in the Retama Auditorium: East Wing
