Radiation Safety Training All personnel who will be working with radioactive material must attend a 4-hour radioisotope users course before performing any experiments. Submission of a certificate or a suitable memo from another institution indicating that an equivalent course has previously been taken may substitute for the UTSA course requirement. Non-isotope users in a lab are not required to attend but may do so for radiation safety awareness. It is the responsibility of radioisotope users to protect non-users through safe work practices. Two sessions of the isotope users course are formally scheduled for the start of each Fall, Spring, and Summer semester. Ad hoc training sessions are offered at least once a month throughout the year to accommodate new users as necessary. Contact the Radiation Safety Officer to schedule an ad hoc training session (Dr. Jim Lewis, ext. 5807, or . Users of radiation-producing machines must have training appropriate to a machine and its degree of hazard. For minimal-threat machines, proper instruction in the operation of the machine and acknowledging an awareness of the inherent radiation hazard of the machine may be sufficient training. For more hazardous machines such as analytical x-ray diffraction, specific training is dictated by the state regulations and must be kept on file.
