LILLIAN WALD BELLER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Award: Number of awards and amounts vary

  • Must have completed at least 60 hours of college credit
  • Must be enrolled full time (minimum 12 credit hours)
  • Must be an English major and must apply to the Teacher Certification Program at UTSA
  • Must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Must have completed FAFSA on file
  • Preference given to single parents, male or female, who are supporting dependent children in their home
    • Application requirements: Lillian Wald Beller Endowed Scholarship application, and nonfiction writing sample of 600-900 words on a topic of literary criticism

ALAN E. CRAVEN ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Award: Number of awards and amounts vary

  • Must be a graduate student majoring in English
  • Must register and complete a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester during the academic year for which the scholarship is awarded
  • Must have a minimum cumulative 3.2 GPA
    • Application requirement: Alan E. Craven Scholarship application

DAVIDSON-SHADDOX CREATIVE WRITING SCHOLARSHIP
Award: Number of awards and amounts vary

  • Must have declared an undergraduate major in English and have complete at least 60 hours of college credit
  • Must be enrolled full time (minimum 12 credit hours)
  • Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA in English courses
  • Must enroll in an upper-level creative writing course during the academic year in which the award is given
    • Application requirement: Davidson-Shaddox Creative Writing Scholarship application and letter, and submission of a creative writing manuscript (poetry or prose).

RICHARD AND JOYCE HARRIS SAPIENCE FOUNDATION GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP
Award: Unless the Fellowship is filled, one recipient will be selected to receive $10,000 to be dispersed in equal amounts for fall and spring semesters. The Fellowship is renewable for up to two additional consecutive years provided recipient continues to meet minimum criteria

  • Must be accepted into or currently enrolled in the master's degree program in English at UTSA
  • Must maintain a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA throughout the period of award
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) credit hours each fall and spring semester
    • Application requirement: Richard and Joyce Harris Sapience Foundation Graduate Fellowship application; 3-page essay to the graduate office of the English department explaining why the applicant is deserving of the Fellowship and the impact receiving the Fellowship will have on his or her life, academic studies and careers; preference will be given to applicants who are single parents with dependent children (The criterion will be given preference over GPA).

KENNETH ALAN HOVEY ENDOWED MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Award: Number and amount of awards vary depending on the applicant pool and funds available

  • Must be enrolled on a full-time basis (minimum of 12 credit hours for undergraduate students and 6 credit hours for graduate students) and actively pursing a degree in the Department of English or in Humanities in the Department of Philosophy and Classics
  • Undergraduate applicants must have completed at least 60 hours of college credit at the time of application
  • Must have a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA for undergraduates, 3.5 for graduates on a scale of 4.0
  • Must demonstrate strong writing skills in a two-page writing sample, submitted along with the application. The topic will vary each year.
    • Application requirement: Kenneth Alan Hovey Scholarship Application and 2-page writing sample

EILEEN LUNDY SCHOLARSHIP FOR EXCELLENCE IN ENGLISH EDUCATION
Award: Number of awards and amounts vary

  • Must be returning to college, with preference given to students who have not attended college full time for a period of 10 years or more, and who have completed a minimum of 60 hours with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Must be enrolled full time (minimum 12 credit hours)
  • Must have declared an undergraduate major in English
  • Must have completed FAFSA on file
    • Application requirements: Eileen Lundy Scholarship for Excellence in English Education application and a 250- to 500-word essay describing reasons for wanting to teach English at the high school or college level

WADE RICHMOND ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Award: Number of awards and amounts vary

  • Must have completed at least 60 hours of college credit
  • Must be an English major actively pursuing literary studies and enrolled full time (minimum 12 credit hours)
  • Must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
    • Application requirements: Wade Richmond Endowed Scholarship application and nonfiction writing manuscript of 600-900 words on a topic of literary criticism

KEITH THOMAS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Award: Number of awards and amounts vary

  • Must be enrolled and in good standing in a graduate program in English(MA or PhD) at UTSA
  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 hours of graduate credit in English during the term of the award
  • Must have a minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA
    • Application requirements: Keith Thomas Memorial Scholarship application, three letters of recommendation, at least one of which addresses the applicants potential as a teacher (see graduate advisory for specific criteria and requirements), 8-10 page writing sample of literary analysis, must have on record official GRE scores (General Exam); these scores will only be used in comparison with applicants of similar socioeconomic background.
