Introduction

University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Scholarships

Academic and need-based scholarships are offered for qualified first-time incoming freshmen, college transfers and currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students.   First-time freshmen and transfer students can apply for UTSA General Scholarships awarded through Financial Aid and Enrollment Services at the same time they apply for admission to UTSA at www.applytexas.org.  Please note that colleges and departments administer their own scholarship programs and therefore have separate applications.  Check with the college or department to which you are applying to determine which scholarships you may be eligible for and obtain an application.

Continuing UTSA undergraduate and graduate students can complete and submit the online General Scholarship Application on the UTSA Scholarship website at www.utsa.edu/scholarships.  You may also conduct a thorough scholarship search utilizing the links at this same website.

IMPORTANT:  The deadline for first-time freshmen, transfer and continuing students to apply for General Scholarships is February 15

To be considered for scholarships, high school graduates must be admitted to The University of Texas at San Antonio by March 15, have SAT and/or ACT scores on file with the Office of Admissions and Registrar.   Transfer students must be admitted to The University of Texas at San Antonio and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.   All students must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program, and, for a vast majority of scholarships, must attend as a full-time student.   To be considered for specific general scholarships, all students must attach required essays, letters of recommendation and any other supporting documents to the application at the time of submission.   It is very important that students take time to read the instructions carefully before completing the application.   Failure to follow instructions could result in your application not being processed.   Most general scholarships require applicants to demonstrate financial need in addition to other criteria; therefore, it is highly recommended that all students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).   The General Scholarship Application applies only to scholarships awarded through UTSA Student Financial Aid and Enrollment Services and is not part of the scholarships offered through other UT System Universities.

Departmental and Honors College scholarships have varying deadlines and require a separate application.   Please review carefully the requirements for all scholarships and obtain applications from the appropriate department. Some scholarships apply to incoming freshmen and transfer students; others apply only to upperclassmen, while others may be appropriate for undergraduate and graduate students.

Note:  Students applying for UTSA general scholarships will be notified in writing only if selected for an award.    Scholarships are extremely limited and highly competitive.   Each year hundreds of qualified students apply for scholarships; unfortunately, not all receive awards.
Applications will be kept on file for a year.   In the event that new scholarships become available during the year, these applications will be re-evaluated as potential recipients if students meet the scholarship criteria.

Helpful Tips in Applying for College, Business or Organizational Scholarships

  • Regardless of whether you are applying for UTSA scholarships or other public scholarships, apply for only those scholarships for which you are eligible.  Read all of the scholarship requirements and directions carefully to ensure you understand what is required. You cannot be awarded if you’re not eligible for a scholarship.
  • Complete the application in full.   If a question doesn’t apply to you, enter N/A, but do not leave it blank.
  • Follow directions and provide only the documents that are required.
  • If possible, type the application. If typing is not possible, print neatly and legibly.

  • Pay close attention to those scholarships that require an essay. Make sure your essay falls within the length requirements. Depending on the essay question, pick one main theme and select three ideas to support your theme.
  • Check spelling and grammar. Have someone—a teacher, counselor or parent—read your essay,
    and ask them for feedback.
  • Don’t wait until your senior year to take the SAT or ACT test. Take them well in advance of the deadlines and as many times as you like to in order to improve your score.

KEEPING YOUR UTSA SCHOLARSHIP

Once awarded a scholarship, please read the award letter carefully for continued eligibility requirements, if any. If the scholarship is renewable, it may require you to submit a new application each year. You may need to maintain a minimum GPA (sometimes less than the GPA that won you the scholarship). You may be required to complete a certain number of credits or specific courses.  Scholarships in general, frequently require a minimum level of enrollment hours.  If you fall below the minimum or fail to enroll a semester, you may lose the scholarship.  If you struggle with a course and consider dropping, please do not do so until you have talked to your adviser and a scholarship representative from Student Financial Aid and Enrollment Services. Dropping one or more courses below full time may impact your scholarship.
