UTSA Music Scholarships are awarded to students who wish to major in music at UTSA. Scholarships may also be available to non-music majors based on ensemble needs. Students will be awarded scholarships based on auditions and other supporting information, in addition to the needs of the Department of Music. Students who wish to be considered for a music scholarship at their audition must check the appropriate box on the audition application.

ALFREDO FLORES / ALAMO MUSIC ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC
Award: Amount of award vary

  • Must be a music major
  • Must have and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Must have completed FAFSA on file
  • Must be a graduate of a Bexar County, Texas, high school
    • Application requirement: Audition

MADRIGAL SINGERS SCHOLARSHIP
Award: Multiple scholarships of $100 for the fall semester

  • Must be enrolled at UTSA in any major
  • Must join the Madrigal Singers and meet all conditions of membership
    • Application requirement: Audition

SAN ANTONIO MUSICAL CLUB SCHOLARSHIP
Award: Number and amount of awards vary and is dependent upon funding

  • Must be a music major
  • Must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Must have completed FAFSA on file

NATHANIEL STOKES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC
Award: $1,500 for the academic year ($750 per semester) awarded every other year, if funds are available

  • Must be enrolled on a full-time basis (minimum of 12 credit hours) as an undergraduate and actively pursuing a degree in music at UTSA
  • Preference given to those who demonstrated financial need as determined by the FAFSA
    • Application requirement: Successful audition and a 1,000-word essay on "Why Music is My Chosen Career Field"

The following scholarships are based on these requirements:

  • Must maintain music major status with a minimum course load of 15 credit hours per semester (6 hours per semester for graduate students)
  • Must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and minimum 3.0 GPA in music courses each semester
  • Must enroll in both applied music lessons and assigned music ensemble each semester
  • Must make an exemplary contribution to the Department of Music through music performance and studies and make satisfactory progress toward completion of the degree
  • Vocalists must audition for Madrigal Singers each fall semester and Opera Workshop each spring semester
    • Application requirement: Audition

MUSIC DEPARTMENTAL SCHOLARSHIP
Award: $200 to $2,000 a year; number of awards vary

  • Available in all areas of music

EVELYN BERG ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Award: $500 to $1,000 a year; number of awards vary

  • Available in all areas of music

RICH BRAUNE ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC
Award: One $1,500 award

  • Must be an undergraduate/graduate student actively pursuing a music degree in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts
  • Must select either keyboard (piano) or vocal music as their area of concentration. The award will alternate each year between piano and voice, the 2010-2011 recipient will be a voice student
  • Must be making satisfactory progress toward completion of a music degree
  • Must enroll in both applied music lessons and assigned music ensemble each semester
  • Piano students must audition for the Keyboard area and vocalists must audition for Madrigal Singers and Opera Workshop for scholarship consideration
  • Preference shall be given to applicants who have a minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA and a minimum 3.0 GPA in music courses each semester and who enroll in at least 15 credit hours per semester as undergraduates (6 hours per semester for graduate students)

EMILY WELLS BROWN ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Award: $500 to $1,000 a year; number of awards vary

  • Available in all areas of music

JOSEPH E. BROWN MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN VOICE ESTABLISHED BY THE UTSA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
Award: Number of awards and amounts vary

  • Must be undergraduate majoring in music with voice as the principal instrument

ANNA MAY DAY MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Award: $500 to $1,500 a year; number of awards vary

  • Available in all areas of music

RONEALE DUNCAN MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Award: Number of awards and amount vary

  • Available for undergraduates in all areas of music

FRIENDS OF MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP
Award: Amount varies

  • Must be a music major

THERESA GORDON ENDOWED VOICE SCHOLARSHIP
Award: $500 to $1,000 a year; number of awards vary

  • Must be majoring in voice performance, or voice must be principal instrument

ANDREW GURWITZ MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Award: Up to $2,000 a year

  • Available in all areas of music

BESS HIERONYMUS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Award: Minimum of $1,000 a year; number of awards vary

  • Must major in organ performance, or organ must be principal instrument

JANICE K. HODGES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN PIANO
Award: $500 to $1,000 a year; number of awards vary

  • Must major in piano, or piano must be principal instrument

OPERA GUILD ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN VOCAL MUSIC EDUCATION

  • Must be a music major with a concentration in voice and declared interest in opera and be actively pursuing a degree in Music Studies
  • Must have at least junior status by the time of awarding

OPERA GUILD ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN VOICE
Award: Number of awards and amounts vary

  • Must be a music major with a concentration in voice, with the intention to enter the professional field of opera or musical theatre
  • Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of 15 credit hours as undergraduate or a minimum of 6 credit hours as a graduate student

LINDA POETSCHKE SCHOLARSHIP IN VOICE
Award: $450 to $1,000 a year; number of awards vary

  • Must be a voice major, or voice must be principal instrument

PRESSER FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP
Award: One award of $5,000 a year

  • Must be a music major
  • Awarded at the end of the junior year

JOE AND CHRIS STUESSY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC
Award: Amount of award varies

  • Must be an undergraduate music major

MARY PAT AND LOUIS H. STUMBERG ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FOR INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES IN MUSIC AND THE SCIENCES
Award: Number and amount of awards vary

  • Scholarship is available to undergraduate or graduate applicants
  • Applicant must be actively pursuing a degree whose course of study combines musical and scientific learning, and whose intellectual growth exemplifies the benefits of interdisciplinary scholarship
  • Students demonstrating the above with majors in the following disciplines are eligible:
    • College of Liberal and Fine Arts: Anthropology, Communication, Music, Psychology, Sociology, other social and behavioral science majors as may be added in the future
    • College of Sciences: all majors
    • College of Engineering: all majors

STURCHIO FAMILY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Award: Number and amount of awards vary

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor of Music Studies degree with emphasis in all-level instrumental music
  • Must have completed a minimum of 60 hours of college credit toward an undergraduate degree

MARJORIE POWELL ZACHRY MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT FOR PIANO SCHOLARS
Award: Number and amounts of awards vary

  • Must be majoring in piano as the principal instrument

MARJORIE POWELL ZACHRY MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP FOR STRINGS
Award: At least $1000 per academic year; number and amount of awards may vary

  • Must have orchestral string instrument as principal instrument
  • Preference will be given to students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and who enroll in 15 semester credit hours per semester (6 hours for graduate)

KATHLEEN WEIR AND ALBERT VALE SCHOLARSHIP IN VOICE
Award: Number and amount of awards vary

  • Must be a voice major, or voice must be principal instrument

THE CHARLOTTE AND CHARLES WALKER OPERA SCHOLARSHIP
Award: One award; amount varies

  • Undergraduate applicants must be enrolled on a full-time basis (at least 12 credit hours), have a 3.0 GPA or better and be actively pursuing a degree in the Department of Music.
  • Graduate applicants must be enrolled in at least 6 hours, have a GPA of 3.0 or better and be actively pursuing a degree in the Department of Music
  • Applicants must express an interest in pursuing a career in opera as determined by the Chair of the Department of Music.
  • Recipients must enroll in Opera Workshop class each semester in which they are receiving the scholarship.
  • Recipients will be selected from the pool of applicants who have passed the music scholarship audition by the announced deadline.
  • An exception to enrollment requirements may be made for students in their final semester who do not need the full-time enrollment to complete their degree requirements for graduation.

SUZANNE AND DENNERT WARE ANNUAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP
Award: One award; amount varies

  • Graduate and Undergraduate applicants must be enrolled on a full-time basis (at least 12 credit hours for undergraduate and 9 hours for graduate)
  • Must maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA

CHARLOTTE LOUISE DASHELL AND LOTA M. SPELL MUSIC EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP
Award: At least one award of $1000 per academic year; number and amount of awards vary

  • Must be a music major pursuing a degree in music education
  • Must be enrolled on a full time basis (12 credit hours undergraduate and 9 credit hours graduate, 6 credit hours if completing student teaching requirement)
  • Undergraduate applicants must have completed at least 59 credit hours an d have successfully completed Music Studies I and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • New Graduate applicants must have earned a cumulative GPA of 2.5 in undergraduate work and continuing Graduate applicant must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Applicant must demonstrate and intention to teach music to children between the ages of 3-12
    • Application requirements: Completed Charlotte Louise Dashiell and Lota M. Spell Music Education Scholarship application form; to include an official transcript of all college work, two completed faculty recommendation forms, and an essay that addresses the applicant's professional goals and intent to teach children ages 3-12
