"Getting To Know You"

Joyce Fox

Associate Director,

Student Financial Aid

Background

  • Native Texan

  • Graduated from Winston Churchill HS

  • BS in Humanities and Anthropology from UTSA

Experience: I have over 13 years experience with UTSA.  As a student I worked in the College of Business Advising Office, Center for Professional Excellence, Center for Archaeological Research and the Admissions and Registrars Office.

I’ve been with the Financial Aid office since December 1996.

Describe your job

Once, I asked my youngest to describe what I do.  He replied, “You help students remember.”  It’s actually a bit more involved than that.  I provide support to students and parents while supervising three different areas and assist co workers with system related questions.  I’m also called upon by the campus community to provide creative direction for campus events.

What is the most unusual job related case you have worked on?

Working with students is the easy part.  Sometimes the most unusual part of my job is working out the details for campus events (right).  I’ve helped to transform the Sombrilla into a beach, Las Vegas Strip, the Old West and a Movie Theater all recycled out of unconventional materials.

What job skills do you use most often?

My ability to solve problems.  There are so many rules and regulations to consider in Financial Aid, sometimes students mistake those rules as hurdles.  Most problems can easily be solved with a brief explanation and walk through of the process.

How do you unwind?

I spend time with my husband and twochildren. My kids teach me so much and I am very lucky to have them in my life.

As Alumni we are a UTSA Family and UTSA will always be a part of our family. In fact, my husband proposed to me under the Sombrilla. My children (right) enjoy attending UTSA events, games and look forward to the time they will be full fledged Roadrunners. They proudly wear their Future Alumni (Class of 2021 & 2023) t-shirts on campus.

When we are not on campus we spend time playing games, singing and dancing or gardening around the house. After they are in bed I work on various hobbies. You name it and I probably do it.

What advice would you give to other Student Affairs staff?

If If you can dream it you can do it.
