Kudos

From Anne Jimenez:

Kudos to Jan McKinney, Coordinator of Student Judicial Affairs and Curtis Odle, Assistant Director of Residence Life, Campus Living Villages for identifying Civility as an issue needing to be addressed and taking the initiative to develop the UTSA Civility Project which resulted in last week’s inaugural Civility Week at UTSA.  More....

Their purpose:  To engage students in thoughtful conversations and experiences regarding civility on campus, skill sets for conflict resolution and citizenship in their lives.

Their guiding principle:  “Civility is claiming and caring for one’s identity, needs and beliefs without degrading someone else’s in the process.”  Author Unknown, Institute for Civility in Government

Through Town Hall Meetings in housing, UTSA Night Out at University Oaks, a Table Topics Luncheon in Roadrunner Cafe and Civility Moments, the campus community was intentionally engaged in civil discourse and deliberately thinking through actions and behaviors.

Civility Moments continue!  Almost 20 professors invited Jan, Curtis or Todd Wollenzier, Coordinator for Student Judicial Affairs into their classrooms for 10-15 minutes to engage their students in discussions about civility, its meaning and its importance at UTSA.  Students were then asked to read, sign and submit a civility pledge if they chose.  Approximately 2,500 students have been reached through these programs and pledges are still being sent in this week.

You may still see the “Choose Civility” posters throughout campus as a constant reminder to choose civility year round.  Many thanks to the campus community members who participated in civility week activities.
