UTSA Listens

Student Affairs logo

Come see us at the inaugural Listening Booth at Fiesta UTSA on Friday, April 8, 2011 (tomorrow) from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm. You can find out more about the program and join us!

It started with a big hairy audacious question. What is student success and how do we support it? UTSA students are our highest priority and greatest asset. UTSA Listens was created from this question as one of the student success initiatives from committee discussions in Student Affairs. This semester marks the pilot launch for UTSA Listens. Full implementation is planned for fall 2011. Below, you will see more about our mission, goals and how you can join us!

Our intention is at some point in a student’s college career, to provide an opportunity for every student to be heard. But even more than that, is to process and analyze the feedback in a way that it allows for substantial transformational change.

We have developed two goals supported by the Student Affairs strategic plan, foundational themes and action steps.

• Students will have the opportunity to identify catalysts for their success and articulate thoughts and concerns to university staff and feel heard.

• Student Affairs will utilize this information to reinforce existing successful programs, provide feedback to emerging programs and services, create new programs based on the information we receive, and share any pertinent information with other departments/divisions at UTSA.

The UTSA Listens pilot launch contains three program components:

Rowdy Shout Outs- Calling all rising sophomores! During rowdy shout outs, volunteer students will call rising sophomores in an effort to ask the questions about student success while offering resource information at the same time. The closing statement will thank the student for their time and contribution; remind them of upcoming events on campus.
Listening Corner- The spring pilot for the listening corner will debut at Fiesta UTSA on April 8, 2011. Following the pilot assessment and evaluation, the corner will be staffed by two people from one department each week for a semester. One person (staff) listens to one participant (student or other) at a time. Staff will not ask questions. They are there to listen. At the end of the five minutes, if a staff person has heard something they feel needs to be addressed, information should be available to hand out as necessary.
Roving Surveys- The purpose of our questions will be to elicit detailed feedback from UTSA Roadrunners about roadblocks that inhibit their academic and behavioral success along with what issues motivate them to leave the University and what inspires them to stay. Roving surveys will be conducted at shuttle stops across campus. This brief survey will provide us the opportunity to interact with students who may be less engaged in our campus community.

Special thanks to our volunteer listeners for Fiesta UTSA: Zwisel Gandia, Em de la Rosa, Mark Macias, Andrea Johnaness, Jessica Leeds, Todd Wollenzier, Marlon Anderson, Jennifer Fueglein, and Anna Boyer.

Congratulations to the committee members that worked on this unique and transformative program:  Jeff Mayo, Daniel Ayala, Todd Wollenzier, Nikki Lee, Jan McKinney, Kim Ellicks-Center, Andrea Johnannes, John Kaulfus, Donna Edmondson, Shawanda Woods, Thomas Baez, Misty Kelley, and Audrey Magnuson.

Girl’s Night Out – Sex & the City

Health and Wellness Expo

Female students, faculty and staff are invited to this year’s Girls' Night Out on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm in the University Center Denman Room. This event is a chance to educate and raise awareness of women’s health with a fun Sex and the City theme.

Girls' Night Out will feature free food, giveaways, a run way show, facials & makeup tips. Guests will be able to participate in demonstrations on important health issues for women, decorate tote bags, and view a showcase of student organization items and guests’ tote bags.

While the evening will be entertaining, the focus will be on empowering individual health and raising awareness of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. There will also be discussions on topics such as alcohol and substance abuse, healthy relationships and cervical cancer. The goal of the event is to educate and empower all female students to gain control over their health including sexual and reproductive health. We want to provide women of UTSA with the skills to be assertive about contraception and able to refuse unwilling sexual encounters.

The event will also feature San Antonio community organizations providing students with information about resources off campus in the San Antonio area. Girl’s Night Out is sponsored by Student Health Services with collaboration between SHADES (Sexual Health Alcohol and Drug Education), The Women’s Resource Center, and SHO (Student Health Organization).

Be A Responsible Roadrunner Attends Fiesta Media Event and Prepares for Party on the Paseo

Health and Wellness Expo

For the past three years, partners of the Bexar County DWI Task Force have collaborated to host a Fiesta media event to promote the Fiesta Safe San Antonio message. This year, Mothers Against Drunk Driving hosted the event. Be A Responsible Roadrunner Consultant R.J. Rangel , BARR Advisor Kelsey Bratcher and CAB Advisor Francisco Lugo attended this year’s media event on Tuesday, April 5 at the Alamo. Pass the Keys messages from San Antonio Police Chief, El Rey Feo, MADD and other special guests were presented encouraging Fiesta participants to utilize a sober designated driver and not to put themselves or others at risk.

“It was a great event to attend,” Rangel said. “I am learning more about Fiesta and the community. Fiesta should be fun, but we have to be safe and responsible too.”

One way UTSA supports San Antonio’s support for education, enforcement and prevention efforts to reduce injuries and fatalities cause by impaired driving is by hosting Party on the Paseo.

Student Leadership Center Hosts Spring Storytelling Series Luncheon

Student Affairs Annual Conference

(April 7, 2011) – The Storytelling Series Luncheon is an event hosted by the Student Leadership Center each semester. The purpose of the luncheon is to bring together students, faculty and staff in a casual atmosphere where they can connect and share their leadership stories. Those that attend are given the opportunity to network through sharing leadership ideas, experiences and challenges.

The Storytelling Series Luncheon was held on March 31, 2011 in the Bexar Room in the UC3. Participants included a diverse mix of students and administrators from all levels of leadership. The luncheon provided an opportunity to share leadership stories and take knowledge back to each individual’s community. Those that attended discussed topics such as the value of higher education in our country, generational differences, leadership styles as well as social capitol versus the value of academics. This semester the discussion also included leadership topics in the current media, including the release of the book The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mom by Amy Chua. Students were asked to share feedback with the Student Leadership Center; here are a few of their comments:

“This luncheon was fantastic! It’s refreshing to meet students that are passionate and actively pursuing that passion. I hope to attend this event again next semester!”

“Wonderful discussion. It was great to see America’s leaders with such insightful ideas and thoughts. It reassures me that our future is in good hands.”

“Awesome event! I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was worth every bit of my time. I loved the topics we talked about.”

“I enjoyed the dialogue and the chance to meet with such a diverse group of people. I hope that conversations like this exist and events like this continue; they are very important.”

The luncheon was attended by over 40 UTSA students and seven UTSA Student Affairs administrators including Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Gage Paine, Associate Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students Kevin Price, Associate Dean of Students John Kaulfus, Director of Inclusion and Community Engagement Marlon Anderson, University Center Director Lowa Mwilambwe, Director of Learning Communities Susan Colorado-Burt and Assistant Director of Volunteer Services Jennifer Rames. Among the student attendees were the six students that facilitated the discussion at each table. These facilitators took the lead role in guiding the discussion around leadership styles, qualities and experiences. The facilitators included: Ana Navarro, Leslie Garcia, Krystal Nicholson, Lacy Guaderrama, Justina Williams and DeMarcus Lewis.

The Storytelling Series Luncheon will be held once a semester. The next luncheon will take place during the Fall 2011 semester. If you are interested in getting an invite to this event, please visit the Student Leadership Center on campus (UC 1.002) or our website at www.utsa.edu/slc/
