Benefits Eligible Employees: UTSA Staff Council Nominations Begin June 6

UTSA Staff Council

Nominees must be UTSA benefits-eligible Classified or A&P employees

(May 20, 2011) -- UTSA Staff Council nominations are coming soon.

Pay close attention to your e-mail around June 6 and nominate yourself or a co-worker in your vice presidential area to represent your area on the UTSA Staff Council for the next two years.

“We are looking for dedicated staff who are able to make a two-year commitment as active Staff Council members,” said Cié Gee, UTSA Staff Council chair. “The Staff Council meets once each month. Membership entitles service on at least one Staff Council committee. Members get to network with other UTSA staff, discuss important issues and participate in other activities.”

The UTSA Staff Council is an advisory body through which UTSA staff members convey information and make recommendations to President Romo regarding staff-related interests and concerns. It is charged by the UTSA President and by the Board of Regents of the University of Texas System, with the goal of continually improving university operations and the well-being of UTSA staff.

A request for nominations will go to all, benefits-eligible staff members on June 6 and will be open for about one week. Nominees will be contacted by Staff Council Elections Committee members once the nomination process closes and asked to accept the nomination and the responsibilities involved in being a Staff Council representative in order to have his or her name placed on the ballot.

Voting for new 2011-2013 Staff Council members is scheduled for late June. New representatives will begin their two-year terms in August 2011.

Be the Voice at UTSA and participate in the Staff Council nomination process. To learn more about Staff Council, visit www.utsa.edu/sc . **Did you know the UTSA Staff Council is on Facebook? “Like” us and stay up-to-date about issues that affect you.

Student Affairs Employee of the Semester

Dr. Ricardo Romo- UTSA President
Yvonne Pena, Director of Student Leadership

Kelsey Bratcher, Associate Director of Student Activities

John Montoya, Assistant Director of Student Development

Yvonne Pena deserves to be recognized for her consistent and devoted passion for serving students. Everything is second to assessing and exceeding the needs of the students. It is her drive to give UTSA students a meaningful leadership and personal development opportunity that causes outstanding service to students, other administrators and visitors. In everything we do within the SLC, we do it in a professional manner that shows our love and respect for our university and the students that choose to attend here. Yvonne leads by example and sets the bar high for those that work within the center and those who participate with our events. She is always willing to go above and beyond for each individual student and remembers that each interaction is precious and could make a strong impact on a student. It is that attitude that drives how each event is planned and each program is implimented, it is all done to ensure that each student receives the best experience and opportunity to think, learn and grow. Yvonne uses her passion to serve students to come up with creative ways to collaborate with other departments and areas on campus. She always considers how to push each program to serve not only the students, but also to bridge departments on campus.

Kelsey Bratcher has worked tirelessly to provide outstanding service to students. She has helped ensure a great array of pre-Spring Break events and she has continued to provide effective leadership to the Party on the Paseo planning team. This program has been selected by BACCHUS as their National Award Winner for creative programming. Kelsey also has jumped in wherever possible to help serve our students. In order to be successful, Kelsey has to work collegially/collaboratively within their unit or outside of their unit. This past semester has been no exception. She has worked with TABC to bring a grant to help fund Party on the Paseo. The collaboration she shares with TABC is outstanding. She is also willing to help other departments and their programs. She is one of the most creative people I know and people ask for her help and creativity. She has worked closely with housing, UTSA PD, Counseling, Health, and others to ensure success. Kelsey is very proud to be a part of UTSA.

John Montoya has had a huge semester. As an advisor to SGA, John has helped produce some significant, high-profile events this semester. They have been great examples of excellence in service and programming. I have outlined a few in this nomination: Provide outstanding service to students. John has approached each activity he has helped facilitate this semester with an attitude of good isn't good. In fact, he has helped the students "buy-in" to a concept of good is adequate, but "we want to be great." He has helped have more direct student involvement in the creation of the programs as well. He has also agreed to help other staff with their programs and frequently attends programs when other staff are hosting them. He feels like attending is important and he will jump in to help and assist with the program as needed. John has had an exemplary semester.

UTSA LeaderShape Institute graduates define their visions for ideal world

Dr. Ricardo Romo- UTSA President

Congratulations to the First Class of UTSA LeaderShape® Graduates!

(May 23, 2011) – The Student Leadership Center is happy to announce the very first graduating class of the LeaderShape® Institute for UTSA. The LeaderShape® graduates spent six intense days at the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch in New Braunfels, Texas completely focused on discovering what drives their passion for change and how they can impact their community.

The mission of the LeaderShape® Institute is “To transform the world by increasing the number of people who lead with integrity and a healthy disregard for the impossible”. During the institute, students were asked to discover their vision and create an action blueprint for change. Throughout the six days, students learned how leadership is not positional and does not require any formal authority. They were consistently challenged in order to discover what they truly desired to see happen in their community and ultimately in the world.
