Release: 06/24/2011

The third 30-minute installment of the six-part series can be seen on FOX Sports Southwest, which reaches more than 10 million cable and satellite TV homes in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana (check local listings for channel number).

The reality sports documentary series that began in May is chronicling the start of the Roadrunners' inaugural football campaign leading up to their season opener on Sept. 3 against Northeastern (Okla.) State.

The show offers an all-access look at how the UTSA football program was started from scratch two years ago by University President and San Antonio native Dr. Ricardo Romo and Athletics Director Lynn Hickey, the only female AD in Texas to oversee both men's and women's sports.

The series also takes viewers on a behind-the-scenes journey that began in March 2009 when UTSA hired Larry Coker to guide the new program. UTSA and FOX Sports Southwest camera crews began following Coker this spring as he readied the team for the inaugural season and they have continued to record Coker's preparations throughout the spring and entering this summer.

Release: 06/23/2011

FRISCO — More than 900 student‐athletes were named to the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Spring Academic Honor Roll, the league office announced on Thursday.

The 953 student‐athletes named to the list breaks last year’s record as the longest honor roll in conference history. There are 12 Southland Student‐Athletes of the Year, four Players of the Year and a total of 143 student‐athletes with perfect 4.0 GPAs. The honor roll includes student-athletes that participated in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field this past spring.

UTSA saw 88 student-athletes named to the honor roll, which was tied with Southeastern Louisiana for the third-most in the league, and that easily eclipsed the athletics department's previous mark of 64 set a year ago. Nine of the Roadrunners that appear on the honor roll posted perfect 4.0 GPAs during the spring semester.

The women's track & field team led the way with 20 honorees, while men's track & field had 13 and baseball checked in with a dozen.

Graduate Internship Opportunities

Are you pursuing a Master’s degree in Higher Ed, Sociology, or a related field and looking for internship opportunities? If so, please contact Sophia Ortiz or Shannyn Romero in the UTSA CAPRI / Mexico Center. The new UTSA CAPRI ACCESS Center will open Saturdays in July, beginning July 9th. In addition, you may also accrue hours helping plan and work events during the week throughout the year. The ACCESS Center, funded by Dr. Harriett Romo’s $600,000 HUD/HSIAC Grant, provides human resources, information sessions, workshops, and a fully-functioning computer lab at the Downtown Campus to aid area foster youth interested in pursuing post-secondary education.

Additionally, Café College, located near the Downtown Campus and funded by Mayor Julian Castro’s office, is always looking for interns. San Antonio Education Partnership coordinates Café College; its primary focus is undergraduate post-secondary education awareness. This is a great opportunity to work with many types of students. Café College is also open on the weekends, giving more flexibility in the accrual of internship hours. Please contact Christopher Goldsberry for more information.

University Career Center hosts national conference attendees

The National Career Development Association is hosting their national conference here in San Antonio this week, and the UTSA University Career Center was selected to showcase their operations as an official professional development site in the pre-conference events. The event was limited to 30 attendees, and every slot was filled with participants of varying roles. Of the participants who were on-campus for the June 29th professional development event, eight different countries were represented. The UTSA Career Center highlighted their unique initiatives, such as the collaboration with other offices like Student Judicial Affairs and the Office of Disability Services, to ensure all students receive our support as they prepare for and pursue their career goals. The UTSA Career Center staff also discussed the structure of our operation, particularly how we maintain a presence both at the Main Campus as well as at the Downtown Campus as a centralized office for all students, regardless of stage or major, and employers, regardless of fields. Sam Gonzales attended and was available to greet and answer questions regarding UTSA’s Student Affairs division with our diverse guests. We had an overwhelmingly positive response from our visitors yesterday regarding this university! More information and official pictures to follow in the next newsletter.

University Center Gallery 23 hosts 'Uncanny Familiarities' photo exhibit

By Tyler Archer Moran Program Coordinator, University Center (June 2, 2011)--Gallery 23 at The University of Texas at San Antonio's University Center will host "Uncanny Familiarities," an exhibition of the photography of UTSA alumna Lupe Mendoza. Free and open to the public, the exhibit runs June 6-Aug. 12.

"Uncanny Familiarities" is a series of photos that explore how the mind recalls and reconstructs memories. The overlapping of non-specific, large, black-and-white images allows Mendoza to construct a narrative from multiple and unrelated experiences into a single linear format.

"I am most intrigued by the mind's inability to control how we consciously or subconsciously retain and recall past experience," said Mendoza...

University Center Advisory Council approves fees for next academic year

Dr. Ricardo Romo- UTSA President

By Jared Jones
Assistant Director of Marketing and Communication, University Center

(May 18, 2011)--The University Center (UC) has published its revised fee, labor and resource rates for the 2011-2012 academic year. The rates will go into effect Sept. 1 and can be viewed in the online UC Handbook of Operating Procedures.

The UC Advisory Council (UCAC) approved fees unanimously. Before fee approval, UC staff educated the UCAC regarding current fees and provided fee benchmark comparisons. Benchmark fees were gathered from event facilities and service providers in the San Antonio community as well as university center facilities around the nation that are similar to the UC.

"These fees allow us to be wise stewards of our student-generated funds and ensure we are able to provide a wide range of services for years to come," said UC Director Lowa Mwilambwe...
