Becoming An Ally

Inclusion and Community Engagement Center staff presented Becoming An Ally training to members of the Student Affairs Division staff of Texas Lutheran University on Thursday, October 13. “We in the Student Life & Learning Division at TLU have benefited greatly from the GLBTQ Allies presentation and training the Inclusion and Community Engagement Center staff provided,” said Kimberly Watts, director of career development at Texas Lutheran University. “We now have greater insight, empathy, and tools for advocacy. You have improved our ability to ensure a safe and enriching educational environment for all students. Many, many thanks!”

The Allies Program seeks to empower administrators, faculty, and staff to create and maintain a welcoming and inclusive environment for GLBTQ members of our campus and community. By providing support, resources, and educational programs, Allies help GLBTQ students find their place and remain a vital part of UTSA.

“Presenting Ally training at TLU allowed us the opportunity to share our message of inclusivity and created a connection with and bridge to another institution in our region and develop a mutually supportive relationship with the staff of TLU,” said Ann Margaret Trujillo, associate director of the Inclusion and Community Engagement Center at UTSA.

There are currently more than 150 Allies at UTSA. Each Ally has attended a training session prior to becoming part of the Allies Program at UTSA so that they may become familiar with the benefits and responsibilities of being an Ally. The next Ally training will be held 1:30 - 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 8, 2011 on the Downtown Campus. You may sign up for the class by going to http://mytraining.utsa.edu/td/. Then, click Classroom Schedule and Enroll at the bottom of the screen. Under For Employees, click “Search, Enroll, Withdraw.” Search by Course Category, by selecting SD in the drop-down menu on the left of the screen. The course is listed as SD0310 – Becoming an Ally.
