UTSA to hold food drive sponsored by Whataburger on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will hold a food drive sponsored by Whataburger prior to the Minot State football game that is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Alamodome.

Fans are encouraged to bring cans or non-perishable food items to donation bins that will be located in Rowdy Town in the North Plaza prior to the Roadrunners' season finale. All items will be given to the San Antonio Food Bank.

Anyone who donates a can or non-perishable item will receive one (1) coupon for a free Whataburger (while supplies last).

According to the San Antonio Food Bank, nearly one out of every four children and one out of every five adults in Southwest Texas struggles with food insecurity and has difficulty meeting basic nutritional needs. Thirty-six percent of the people served are children and 14 percent are seniors.

UTSA and Whataburger are proud to serve this cause and encourage fans to donate to help those in need.

Student Travel Update

The driver training requirement under the student travel policy is now an online course. The Defensive Driving Awareness online course (SA 503) can be accessed through your UTSA My Training account. Operators who drive a rental vehicle to an activity or event covered under the student travel policy must complete this requirement. This requirement also applies to university-owned or leased vehicles, however, university-owned or leased vehicles are rarely used for student travel. Go to https://mytraining.utsa.edu/moodle/my/index.php and log into your My Training account. Click on the General Safety section and then click on Defensive Driving Awareness Program (SA 503). Review the instructions and complete the course and exam prior to departure. Once the exam is passed, your training history will reflect successful completion of the course. Provide verification that you passed the course to the department organizing the activity or event. If you have any questions about this requirement, please contact Carol Gonzalez, Student Ombudsperson, at (210) 458-4040.

HOP 5.09 Class Attendance Policy

You may come across a situation where a student asks for guidance because he/she is going to miss class due to a religious holy day, official university function, active military service and/or an illness/extenuating circumstance. Please review the HOP 5.09 Class Attendance Policy - http://utsa.edu/hop/chapter5/5-9.html for more information about the responsibilities of the student, instructor/faculty member and employee in charge of university-sanctioned activities. Note: Employees in charge of university-sanctioned activities must file a list of participating students and the dates requested for excused absences with the Office of the Provost. The Excused Absence from Class Attendance Form which is signed by the student and instructor/faculty member should also be utilized to outline any missed assignment requirements.

Thank You Day educates students about giving to UTSA

(Nov. 14, 2011) -- If UTSA relied solely on tuition and support from the state, this semester would have ended Nov. 9. Student-paid tuition and state monies cover only approximately 70 percent of the semester's costs -- the rest is funded by other sources including donations from foundations, corporations, alumni and other friends of UTSA.

Hundreds of students attended Thank You Day to sign the thank-you banner and record thank-you video messages for donors. Thank You Day is an event sponsored by the Roadrunners for Life (RR4L), a student-led campaign dedicated to educating students about supporting UTSA.

At the annual event, students express their appreciation for donor support...

UTSA student Justina Williams named October Roadrunner of the Month

University Center plaque

(Nov. 4, 2011) -- The UTSA Student Leadership Center announces Justina Williams as Roadrunner of the Month for October 2011. She was nominated for the honor by Charlin Jones, UTSA assistant director of special events.

Originally from New Orleans, La., Williams graduated from North Crowley High School in Fort Worth, Texas. A UTSA junior studying electrical engineering, she hopes to develop technology that will improve life for people with disabilities. Looking forward to working as an engineer, she eventually would like to open a nonprofit agency to give back to the communities that played a role in her life.

As a former peer leader and residential assistant, and current president of the Honors Alliance, Williams is an excellent example of leadership at UTSA. According to Williams, these positions have challenged her to be the best version of herself as she strived to "pay forward" after the help and support she received from others in her time at UTSA.

5th Annual Up ‘til Dawn

UTSA student-athletes

The 5th Annual Up ‘til Dawn benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital hosted this past weekend was a huge success. The event highlighted some new elements including: Mr. & Ms. UTSA as the event MCs, team registration, team activity challenge, and a large variety of door prizes. The first goal of this event is to prepare letters to be sent to student’s family and friends with the hope that they will donate to St. Jude.

At this year’s event more than 3,000 letters were submitted over last year breaking the UTSA Up ‘til Dawn record. There was also a record number of attendees this year – approximately 370 student registered making up 77 teams. The day of the event an additional 100 students showed up ready to participate. This event would not have been such a great success without the Up ‘til Dawn team and the excellent volunteers from VOICES, CAB, and the Campus Recreation Center staff. Thank you UTSA for participating in the 5th Annual Up ‘til Dawn. Look forward to our check dedication in the spring 2012 semester. Cross your fingers that we meet or exceed our goal of $20,000.
