Motivation: What's Yours?

The fall semester has been a whirlwind so far and I have enjoyed every minute of it. Our students tapped their way to victory and we have experienced both academic and athletic accomplishments in just the first few weeks of the fall semester.

Recently, the Directors in the Division of Student Affairs gathered for a strategic planning retreat. It was the first step in the process of charting our course for the next five years. During this time, we were able to discuss the challenges as well as the areas where we have achieved considerable success. I believe that it takes a great deal of motivation both to design and execute these new plans. Therefore, the process has caused me to think a lot about motivation.

What motivated you to work in higher education?

It seems like a simple question, but we all come to work at a university from different paths. It is important to understand our different sources of motivation that compel us toward great work. It is something that you will hear me talk about throughout the semester.

To get us started, I have included some questions below. Let me know what motivates you by sending me an email with your answers.

  • What motivates you in your life?
  • What motivates you to do a good job?
  • What motivates you to achieve more?

Following this shared understanding of our individual motivations, we turn our attention to what motivates us as a division. How does our strategic plan drive and motivate us?

I look forward to hearing your perspectives as we move forward to the next five years of success at UTSA.

Best wishes,

Sam
