Rowdy Gras 2016

Rowdy Gras 2016 poster

February 2016 marks the 3rd year for the annual UTSA ROWDY GRAS! This year we have added MORE music, food and fun ways to connect with your campus community!

Fat Tuesday on February 9th kicks off with a Cajun/Creole food tasting with music by DJ Ephlat on the UC Paseo from 11am-1pm.

Later that afternoon the Rowdy Gras Parade starts lining up around 5:45pm on the UC Paseo - everyone is welcome and encouraged to join in! The parade will be led by Rowdy the Roadrunner as we make our way over to the UC Lawn where the King and Queen of Rowdy Gras will kick off the event around 6pm!

Throughout the event from 6-9pm there will be lots of free activities and food. Students can explore the event and learn more about the history of Mardi Gras and the cultural and community history. Giveaways for students include the official Rowdy Gras t-shirt and medallion while they last!

Keep up with updates and contests throughout the weeks leading up to Rowdy Gras with the ROWDY GRAS DUCK HUNT! Mardi Gras themed rubber duckies will be hidden in and around the UC buildings and we will tweet out clues and riddles for their locations. Students can find a duck, take it to the UC Programs Office and exchange it for the Rowdy Gras t-shirt before anyone else even has one! (and skip the line!). Follow us @THEUTSAUC #ROWDYGRAS16

Go Green! Go Roadrunners! Go UTSA! - RecycleMania 2016

Recycle Mania Logo

The University of Texas at San Antonio has begun its countdown for Recyclemania 2016 – this is a nationwide college and university recycling competition meant to bring awareness to recycling and waste reduction. As in past years, UTSA will be going up against some of the largest schools in the nation as well as 20 Texas colleges. Early warm-up competition starts January 24 – February 6, 2016. Then it’s off to what we hope will be another great year for our 2016 competition which will start on Sunday February 7, 2016 and goes through Saturday April 2, 2016.

Sponsored by the UTSA Office of Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management, UTSA’s success on Recyclemania needs the help of our community by ensuring we all do our part to recycle. We believe our university has the best team of students, faculty, and staff which will enable us to place high in the Recyclemania competition and we are asking for everyone’s help and cooperation. So don’t forget to do your Environmental Duty and RECYCLE.

This will be our 8th year to participate in Recyclemania. We hope to continue placing in the top 10% of all participating schools. Our 2015 placement was 22nd out of 232 colleges and universities. REMEMBER: We are UTSA Roadrunners taking responsibility to clean the environment for a better future. Let’s recycle together Roadrunners!

Mark your calendar – no cost paper document shredding service! As part of Recyclemania, Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management will be providing paper document shredding on February 17, 2016 by a local shred company to include sensitive documents. This shredding services is available to all of the UTSA community and will be held in the HUC parking lot, between HUC and Ximenes Garage, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Please take advantage of this opportunity to shred sensitive documents either from work or home. Please contact Anastacio Alvarez at (210) 452-7252 for additional information.

Expanded After-Hours Counseling Services Program

UTSA Crisis Help LineThe UTSA community can contact Counseling Services at 210-458-4140 for support both during and after office hours. UTSA Counseling Services has offered after-hours on-call services since 2003, utilizing existing staff members. On-call services were previously accessed through UTSA Police Dispatch and so were limited to client crisis/emergency or police consultation.

Going forward, UTSA Counseling Services has contracted with ProtoCall, a leading provider of third-party telephone behavioral services, to provide after office hour counseling services. By contracting with ProtoCall, the entire UTSA Community will have immediate access to a qualified mental health professional 24/7. Protocall professionals are experienced with college student mental health and will have access to UTSA and San Antonio-specific information and resources. ProtoCall will alert UTSA Counseling Services of over-night calls so that staff members can provide timely follow-up.
