It’s All About Perspective

It is a little known fact that sometimes I sing in the office.

I find myself humming a tune while studying spreadsheets, breaking into song on my way to a meeting or serenade folks in the office before I leave for the day. The songs have lyrics that align with what is on my mind at the moment. However, that alignment isn’t always obvious to others and I am often asked, “What did that mean?”

My answers require thought. I don’t always realize the immediate connection that brought that song to mind and even if I could identify the reason, the listener wouldn’t always have the same perspective about the song. Let me share a couple of examples.

Stars
by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

“And I can't look at the stars
They make me wonder where you are
Stars, up on Heaven's boulevard
And if I know you at all,
I know you've gone too far
So I, I can't look at the stars”

The lyrics imply a somber tone to me and a sense of longing. However, I have been told it is inspirational — it acknowledges a process of awareness and growth. We may not be able to reach heights right now, but the song goes on to discuss our capacity for love. Same lyrics, same song but different perspectives on what was heard.

My Heart Will Go On,
made famous by Céline Dion

“You're here, there's nothing I fear
And I know that my heart will go on"

We all know this song as one that discusses loss. However, the lyrics point us toward hope. My heart will go on, which is again two very different perspectives.

The truth is we all have different perspectives. We hear, understand and process differently, as do our students. The trick is to talk about these differences and not rush to decide which perspective is correct or incorrect. Acknowledge each person’s perspective, take the time to understand and, at the same time, stay true to your song.

Best wishes,

Sam
