Like many of you, I'm moving around campus to many Roadrunner Days events — "busy" is such an understatement when describing our schedules at this time of year!

The start of an academic year has many familiar aspects — like Roadrunner Days — but with a new audience: each new Roadrunner class will make its own imprint on our campus, driven in part by their own dreams and aspirations.

One fun way to get to know the students of the Class of 2020 is to flip through the Mindset List produced by Beloit College — an annual look at the perspectives of incoming freshmen.

For example, the Beloit team shared the following gems about the Class of 2020, most of whom were born in 1998:

  • They have never had to watch or listen to programs at a scheduled time.
  • There has always been a digital swap meet called eBay.
  • Bluetooth has always been keeping us wireless and synchronized.
  • NFL coaches have always had the opportunity to throw a red flag and question the ref.
  • Snowboarding has always been an Olympic sport.
  • If you want to reach them, you’d better send a text—emails are oft ignored.

So for me, one of my favorite familiar parts of the new year, Roadrunner Days, is made all the more special by the fresh perspectives brought to campus by each new class of Roadrunners — and the many new opportunities Student Affairs will have to craft meaningful educational experiences with them.

Best wishes,

Sam
