Faculty, staff, and students should complete an IDF when an
invention has been discovered. The purpose of the form is to
alert STTM to an invention and to introduce the invention and the
inventors to the office.
Information required includes
inventor names and contact information, invention title and
abstract, funding sources, and any agreements, such as sponsored
research or materials transfer, that create obligations of the
invention to a provider or sponsor.
Further, the IDF introduces the
requirements for patent, i.e. novelty, non-obviousness, and utility,
which gently guide inventors to think about their invention from the
legal perspective of patenting and contracts, and the utilitarian
perspective of industry and product development.
