 FAQs For Inventors

How Do I Disclose an Invention?
Submit a UTSA Invention Disclosure Form (IDF) to STTM via e-mail according to the instructions. Completion of the IDF is the first step in the required disclosure and appropriate protection of inventions created by faculty, staff, and students at UTSA.
The Invention Disclosure Form may be downloaded from this site.

What is an Invention Disclosure?
An invention disclosure is a written, confidential summary of your invention. First, it serves as official notification to the university of your invention. Second, the Intellectual Property Advisory Committee and the university will use it as a source of information to understand and review your invention. Finally, the disclosure may serve as a reference for legal counsel to conduct “prior art” searches and patentability opinions for UTSA. Therefore, it is important that you submit a complete and detailed disclosure.

What happens after I submit an Invention Disclosure Form?
Receipt of a complete disclosure initiates a series of reviews to determine whether or not UTSA should assert The University of Texas System’s interest in the invention, and whether or not a patent or other intellectual property protection is appropriate. The technology development office will keep you informed during this process.
