Selections
The first step in the selection process occurs on the UTSA campus. An Honors College Scholarship committee will select 32 likely candidates from among all the applicants in the UTSA Terry Scholarship competition. The names of those 32 nominees will be forwarded to the Terry Foundation.

The Foundation's Board of Directors then reviews the nominees’ applications, and a number of finalists will be invited for required interviews on the UTSA campus. The Foundation will notify applicants if they are selected for an interview. The interviews will take place at UTSA in April 2008; the final date will be posted as soon as the Foundation sets it. The Foundation pays expenses incurred by prospective Scholars who are invited to interview.

A panel consisting of the Directors of the Foundation, Terry Scholar alumni, and current Terry Scholars will conduct the interviews. The Directors will then select the UTSA scholarship recipients from among the students interviewed.

The new Terry Scholars are notified by mail within approximately three weeks of their interview.

Please note that UTSA serves as a nominating body only; the Terry Foundation will make all final decisions regarding scholarship awards.
Scholarship Award
The Board of the Directors of the Terry Foundation takes responsibility for determining financial need. They calculate the award amount by taking into account the student’s and parents’ financial resources, other scholarships the student may receive, and UTSA’s calculation of the cost of attendance. The student’s and parents’ financial resources is assessed using information from the FAFSA and the student’s Terry application. Taking into account all this information, the Foundation provides sufficient assistance to cover provides sufficient assistance to cover tuition, books, fees, and reasonable living expenses on campus.

The Terry Scholarship is renewable annually, for up to eight full semesters, at the discretion of the Board of Directors of the Terry Foundation. The renewal is automatic unless the Scholar is notified that his or her scholarship will not be renewed. Students can only receive funds during a semester (including a summer semester) when they are enrolled for a minimum of 12 hours.

In order to retain the Terry Scholarship, scholars must:
  • maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5
  • remain unmarried and without children
  • write an acceptable, annual, self-evaluation letter
  • attend all functions sponsored by the Terry Foundation (usually 3 per year)
  • comply with the rules prescribed by the university and the Foundation Board of Directors
  • live on campus during their freshman year
The Foundation provides information on the content of the self-evaluation letter. Dates for the Terry Foundation functions will be provided to Terry Scholars at the beginning of the academic year.

Students may apply for other scholarships at the same time they are applying for Terry Scholarships and, in fact, are encouraged to do so. Terry applicants who also submit an application to the UTSA Honors College by February 1 will also automatically be considered for UTSA Presidential Honors Scholarships and other Honors scholarships.

Please note that the Terry Scholarship application is not an application to the Honors College. The Honors College application must be submitted independently.
