The Board of the Directors of the Terry Foundation takes responsibility for determining the size of awards. Transfer Scholars receive $12,000 per year. For high school Scholars, the Foundation calculates the award amount by taking into account the student’s and parents’ financial resources, other scholarships the student may receive, and UTSA’s calculation of the cost of attendance. The student’s and parents’ financial resources are assessed using information from the FAFSA and the student’s Terry application. The Foundation provides sufficient assistance to cover provides sufficient assistance to cover tuition, books, fees, and reasonable living expenses on campus minus the amount assigned as the family contribution.

The Transfer Scholarship is renewable annually for up to six semesters and the High School Terry Scholarship is renewable annually for up to eight semesters -- at the discretion of the Board of Directors of the Terry Foundation. The renewal is automatic unless the Scholar is notified that his or her scholarship will not be renewed. Students can only receive funds during a semester (including a summer semester) when they are enrolled for a minimum of 12 hours.

In order to retain the Terry Scholarship, scholars must:

  • maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5
  • Earn a GPA of at least 2/0 each semester
  • write an acceptable, annual, self-evaluation letter
  • attend all functions sponsored by the Terry Foundation (usually 3 per year)
  • comply with the rules prescribed by the university and the Foundation Board of Directors
  • live on campus during their freshman year
The Foundation provides information on the content of the self-evaluation letter. Dates for the Terry Foundation functions will be provided to Terry Scholars at the beginning of the academic year.

Students may apply for other scholarships at the same time they are applying for Terry Scholarships and, in fact, are encouraged to do so. Terry applicants who also submit an application to the UTSA Honors College by February 1 will also automatically be considered for UTSA Presidential Honors Scholarships and other Honors scholarships.
