GRE (Graduate Record Exam)

The General GRE test measures skills that have been acquired over a long period of time, and that are not related to any specific field of study. The general test yields separate scores for the verbal, quantitative and analytical abilities related to success at the graduate level in all college departments except business.

Admission requirements to the graduate school of your choice are done on an individual basis. Consult the Home Page of your desired major or request a graduate college catalog from the Graduate School at UTSA by consulting their Home Page.

GRE General Exam

The General GRE is no longer offered in the paper-pencil format. The General GRE is available by computer only. Students may call 1-800-GRE-CALL for computerized GRE scheduling or visit their website at

GRE Subject Exams

The GRE Subject tests are available via paper-pencil format however only at limited sites. Check the current GRE registration booklet or the web for a complete listing of test sites.

Starting on October 1, 2002, the General Test will be composed of verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing sections. The verbal and quantitative sections will be unchanged from their present content. The analytical writing section will be identical to the stand-alone test we now call the Writing Assessment, which was introduced in October 1999. The current analytical section will no longer be part of the General Test.

These changes to the General Test are being made in order to (1) help admissions committees assess higher level critical thinking and analytical writing skills of applicants, and (2) provide a performance assessment that measures a test taker's ability to make and critique arguments, which is central to the work done by graduate students in most fields.
