Meet the Director Barbara MillisBarbara Millis photo

 

Joining The Teaching and Learning Center (formerly the TEAM Center) as the new Director on 1 August, 2008, Barbara Millis brings a wealth of experience to the position. She has been active in faculty development since 1982, directing programs at the University of Maryland University College, the U. S. Air Force Academy, and the University of Nevada, Reno before coming to UTSA.

Barbara received her Ph.D. in English literature from Florida State University. She is a sought-after workshop presenter and keynoter, frequently offering workshops as a featured presenter at professional conferences (Teaching Professor Conference, Lilly Teaching Conferences, Association of American Colleges and Universities, Council of Independent Colleges, etc.) and at over 300 colleges and universities. She publishes articles on a variety of faculty development topics such as cooperative learning, classroom observations (she was a FIPSE Project Director on that topic), the academic portfolio, microteaching, syllabus construction, classroom assessment/research, critical thinking, writing for publication, focus groups, writing across the curriculum, academic games, and course redesign.

Barbara is the author of three books with two more in progress. Oryx Press published in 1998 a book, co-authored with Philip Cottell, Cooperative Learning for Higher Education Faculty. In 2002 Stylus Press published Using Simulations to Enhance Learning in Higher Education, co-authored with John Hertel, which will be followed by a book on academic games. Jossey-Bass published in 2008 a revision of Judith Grunert’s The Course Syllabus: A Learning-Centered Approach, co-authored with Margaret Cohen. A book on using cooperative learning (structured group work) in different disciplines is in progress.

While at the U. S Air Force Academy, Barbara won both a teaching award and a research award. In 2002 Barbara loved being a Visiting Scholar at Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand.
