UTSA

Teaching & Learning Center Service Learning Grant Application

Service-learning is an educational philosophy and pedagogical method of experiential learning that embraces ethical and socially responsible participation in structured learning activities. The Service-Learning Grant (SLG) at UTSA funds the development of new courses or the redesign of existing courses that incorporate the principles and pedagogy of service-learning. Funding for the SLG comes from the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC). This form will allow you to fill out the required information and submit your grant proposal online.

Program Objectives
The Service-Learning Grant provides funding from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Successful applicants will focus on course development that strengthens community learning or civic education; that integrates democracy, diversity and social justice as complementary educational objectives; or, that prepares students for entering diverse communities with people who are different from themselves. We encourage development of courses to engage students in service experiences with a community partner by addressing a community-defined need; to participate in collaborative research and/or teaching projects that involve community partners; or to generate participation in co-curricular activities. As with all service-learning initiatives, student reflection is a key component.
