Students help bring lacrosse to UTSA
(Sept. 5, 2003)--It's a popular sport at Ivy League schools and now UTSA lacrosse team members are bringing the excitement to the San Antonio community. The team, in its second year as a club sport, is recruiting players for the spring season.
Lacrosse is a goal game in which players use a long-handled stick with a mesh pouch for catching, carrying and throwing the ball.
Jay Boswell, a graduate student and San Antonio native, brought the concept to UTSA last year, after playing on Texas Tech's team as an undergraduate.
"After I came to campus last year and found out UTSA didn't have a team, I thought it would be a great idea to start one here," said Boswell.

One of Boswell's first recruits, Abel Dominguez, contacted his friends, and a few weeks later UTSA's team was competing at a tournament at Texas A&M University. Boswell hopes to field a team of 20 in the spring with 10 players on the field at a time under lacrosse rules.
The sport is a challenging one, according to Boswell, with Saturday matches that last up to three hours.
The UTSA lacrosse team practices Tuesday and Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. and the registration fee is $60.
