Photo exhibit highlights work of UTSA staff member

(Sept. 8, 2003)--"La Luz," a series of sequential, black-and-white photographs by Arturo Almeida, is on display through Sept. 25 in the Joan Grona Gallery, Blue Star Arts Complex, 112 Blue Star.

According to Almeida, art consultant for the UTSA Office of the President, the exhibit uses shadows and light "to capture the details of life."

Photographs in the exhibit are for sale with proceeds benefiting the Marie Rocamontes Henriquez Endowment Fund at the Alamo Community College District (ACCD).

The exhibit is part of Fotoseptiembre USA, a September forum for the exhibition and celebration of photography and photography-based art forms. Local exhibits are produced by SAFOTO, the San Antonio Photography Festival.

After Henriquez's death, Almeida worked with her family to establish the endowment named after his longtime friend. The fund primarily supports the ACCD international programs faculty and staff exchange, where Henriquez was coordinator for international programs.

After the exhibit's theme was decided, it still had no name. The search for a name ended when Almeida learned that Henriquez's middle name was "de la Luz," Spanish for "of the light."

Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday-Saturday, and noon-5 p.m., Sunday.
