The exhibit is part of Fotoseptiembre USA, a September forum for the exhibition and celebration of photography and photography-based art forms. It is locally produced by the San Antonio Photography Festival (SAFOTO).
Curated by Arturo Almeida, consultant for the UTSA Office of the President, "Chronicles" is the first solo photo exhibit by Romo. The photos in the exhibit are for sale with proceeds benefiting the UTSA-Fox Tech Scholarship Fund.
"Words alone cannot completely tell the history of a people," Almeida says in his curator's statement. "The institutional memory of a culture is born of song and dance; where words fail, art fills the gap. 'Chronicles' serves such a purpose. Here is the story of a community, the unusurped memories of a culture, the art of a historian."
Romo's longtime interest in photography became part of a research project conducted by his wife, Harriett Romo, UTSA associate professor of sociology. During trips throughout South Texas and Mexico, Romo collected an album of portraits that became the "Chronicles" exhibit.
The exhibit is supported by Otis and Carolyn Parchman, Daniel Guajardo Printing and Benavides Framing.
