Fund-raisers benefit tennis teams, women's scholarships

(Sept. 8, 2003)--The UTSA Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will host two fund-raising events for athletics programs -- a pro-am tennis tournament and a co-ed volleyball tournament.

The eighth annual UTSA Runner Fall Tennis Pro-Am Tournament is 6 p.m., Monday, Sept. 15. The competition is to generate fan and financial support for the UTSA men's and women's tennis teams, and is an opportunity to meet veteran and new UTSA tennis players.

Cost is $40 per person, with two or more people in the same family receiving a discount. Prizes are tennis T-shirts, caps and sweatshirts, and play will be at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.

The tournament format will be men, women and mixed round-robin doubles play. A professional (UTSA student-athlete) will double up with an amateur (guest) or two amateurs who want to play together.

Check-in is at 5:30 p.m. at the UTSA tennis center in the Physical Education Building on the 1604 Campus. Players will assemble at 6 p.m. at the courts for instruction and to meet guests and teammates, and play begins at 6:15 p.m. A buffet dinner and award presentation follow at 8 p.m.
