UTSA, UTHSCSA connect to Internet2 platform
(Sept. 4, 2003)--The UTSA Office of Information Technology (OIT) network services team announces that UTSA's connection to Internet2 is active.
Internet2 connects more than 200 universities, research institutions, and a few corporate members. The Internet2 connection runs on the Abilene network, which is wholly separate from the commercialized Internet that the world has come to know and use on a daily basis.

The new platform provides an opportunity to collaborate on research projects and to efficiently transfer large data files. Internet2 will also be used to separate super-computing tasks from less intensive computing tasks among several institutions.
UTSA, in partnership with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA), received a National Science Foundation grant to help underwrite costs. The connection to Internet2 is completely transparent to the user, and between member institutions regular Internet traffic is automatically routed through it.
