According to Manz, four wells have been dug so far, and he and 20 volunteers are training the residents to drill wells and maintain hygienic conditions in order to reduce the chance of contracting disease. When Manz first went to Honduras to test water sources, he found that nine out of 10 wells tested were high in e-coli bacteria.
Manz became involved with the project through the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas, and then enlisted the help of Living Water International, a company based near Houston that provides training in drilling and maintaining water wells in undeveloped areas.
Portions of the Manz interview can be seen on UTSA Television.
