"I'm very optimistic about the future with the strong faculty we have in place," said Tavernini. "The administration has provided tremendous support and encouragement as we start implementing a master of science program in industrial mathematics and look to develop a doctoral program in applied mathematics."
Tavernini, who developed a computer graphics curriculum and laboratory at UTSA, won a NASA award for his innovative computer graphics technology project in support of the space shuttle program. In the 1980s, Tavernini developed the mathematical foundation for hybrid systems, a new field of interest to mathematicians, computer scientists and engineers.
Before coming to UTSA, Tavernini was a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science at Indiana University, Bloomington. He received his doctoral degree in computer science from University of Wisconsin-Madison and has bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering.
