UTSA, USAA kick off United Way campaign

(Oct. 14, 2003)--The University of Texas at San Antonio and USAA teamed up Tuesday morning to host a leadership breakfast for representatives spearheading this year's United Way campaign.

Pictured at the breakfast are (from left) George Norton, UTSA State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC) chair and assistant vice president for admissions, Rita Sandoval, Avance spokeswoman, and UTSA President Ricardo Romo.

Sandoval described Avance services provided as a result of United Way support. Avance is a nonprofit organization that works to build stronger families and communities by improving the self esteem, confidence and competence of at-risk parents. The West Side agency, celebrating its 30th anniversary, works with young parents to improve family communication and assists parents returning to school to complete secondary education.

Romo closed the event encouraging leaders to spread the United Way message and restating the goal of a 50-percent participation rate among UTSA employees.

The UTSA campaign runs through Nov. 7 with a fund-raising goal of $120,000.
