
Roadrunner women dominate cross-country meet
(Oct. 23, 2003)--The UTSA women's cross country team turned in a perfect score, handily defeating the Texas State women in the first-ever UTSA-Texas State dual meet Thursday afternoon at the UTSA Cross Country Course. Texas State edged UTSA to win the men's race.

In the women's two-mile race, the Roadrunners swept the top five spots en route to a perfect score of 15, 31 points ahead of their I-35 rivals. Senior Letitia Gilkes (St. Michael, Barbados) led the way to the finish line, crossing in 12 minutes, 17 seconds.

All from San Antonio, sophomores Meghan Chance and Ashley McDonald finished second (12:21) and third (12:25), respectively, while freshmen Veronica Silva and Karilyn Petty placed fourth (12:37) and fifth (12:47), respectively, to round out the top five.
Sophomore Rita Lambert (San Antonio) finished seventh in 12:58, giving UTSA six of the top seven finishers. Joy Burson was Texas State's top runner, coming in sixth in 12:54.
Texas State scored 21 points to defeat UTSA's 34 in the men's two-mile race. James Ortiz and Randy Arias finished first (10:03) and second (10:07), respectively to lead the Bobcats. Freshman Chris Allen (Houston) was the top Roadrunner, covering the loop in 10:10. Dave Stone clocked 10:14 to take fifth place, while sophomore Jason Braun (Corpus Christi) placed seventh in 10:18.
Freshmen Adrian Vargas (Del Rio) and David Martinez (Burnet) finished ninth (10:39) and 11th (10:55) to round out the scoring for the Roadrunners.
Both squads return to action Monday, Nov. 3, when they travel to Huntsville, Texas, to compete in the Southland Conference Championships.
