Bond election to have impact on UTSA athletics facilities
(Oct. 27, 2003)--The upcoming joint special election on Nov. 4 features nine bond propositions (four from Bexar County and five from San Antonio) that if approved will pump $214 million into quality-of-life improvements for all city and county residents.
Dubbed the "People's Nine," the bonds will support projects as diverse as bridge and road improvements, an emergency operations center, public health facilities, library facilities, recreation sites and more. The tax rate will not be raised by the bond vote.

Of key interest to the UTSA community is a county bond proposal (Prop. 3) that will provide $1.5 in funding for a new track and soccer complex on the 1604 Campus.
"A first-class track and soccer facility would allow UTSA and the San Antonio community to host competitions on a state, national and international level. It also would offer UTSA students additional facilities and opportunities for intramural and club sports," Athletics Director Lynn Hickey said.
Presently at UTSA, track events are hosted at a high school facility because the current track has no permanent bleachers. Hickey calls the proposed $1.5 million bond project "an excellent beginning" toward raising the funds for this facility. Because athletics receives no tax dollars from the State of Texas, UTSA will seek other donors and sources for remaining costs.
Students can find out more information about the "People's Nine" at an information session to be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 28 in the University Center Pecan Room (2.01.26) on the 1604 Campus. The Student Government Association will play host to the People's Nine support organization. Spokespersons Juan Solis and Keith Fortney will answer questions about the Nov. 4 election.
