College of Business sponsors Oct. 14 ethics symposium

(Oct. 7, 2003)--"Restoring Trust" is the theme for the ninth annual Business Ethics Symposium sponsored by The University of Texas at San Antonio College of Business. The symposium will be Tuesday, Oct. 14 and is free and open to the public.

The daylong program will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 3:15 p.m. All lectures will be in the Business Building Auditorium (2.01.02) on the 1604 Campus.

Richard Mason, director of the Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility at Southern Methodist University, will discuss "Restoring Trust in Corporate America" at 9:30 a.m. Mason's current areas of teaching include corporate ethics and responsibility, global business environment and managing emerging technologies.

At 11 a.m. Jim Wiseman, vice president for external affairs for Toyota Motor Manufacturing of North America, will present "Toyota: A Corporate Response to Social Responsibility." Wiseman is assisting with the startup of the $800 million Toyota Motor Corp. plant to be built in San Antonio.

The symposium will conclude at 2 p.m. with a panel discussion, "Restoring Trust, A Community Affair." The panel will feature Keith Frederick, founder and chief executive officer of SecureInfo; Pat Ozuna, co-chair of Communities Organized for Public Service; Ricardo Romo, president of UTSA; and Nelson Wolff, Bexar County judge.

The symposium was established in 1989 as a joint venture between the College of Business and the UTSA Methodist Student Movement. The event allows students, faculty, business and community leaders to engage in an ongoing dialogue about the practice of business ethics and the role of moral wisdom for corporate social responsibility. The event is sponsored by Broadway Bank.
