UTSA announces record enrollment growth in 2003

(Oct. 3, 2003)--UTSA officials credit this year's record enrollment growth to increased retention, greater statewide visibility of the university and an expanded array of course and degree offerings.

Enrollment at UTSA grew from 22,016 to 24,665 students, an increase of 13 percent in one year.

"This milestone is a significant measure of the success of many programs here," President Ricardo Romo said. "UTSA students are succeeding at a rate never before seen in the institution's history, and the growing availability of student services and academic programs is helping the university become an institution of first choice."

Romo also credited the university's recruitment, publicity and marketing efforts for this year's increase.

"UTSA sees itself as a leader in the state-mandated 'Closing the Gaps' initiative, and I have asked everyone in the administration to help promote UTSA as an institution that provides both access and excellence."

Retention of enrolled UTSA students grew to 77 percent this year from 67 percent in 2002.

"Providing quality education and student programming is key to helping students succeed," said Rosalie Ambrosino, vice president for student affairs. "Our goal is to not only open a door to higher education for students, but make certain that they have the necessary support to stay in college and earn a degree from UTSA."

UTSA has awarded more than 55,000 degrees in its 34-year history. A recent academic restructuring increased the number of colleges to seven and added the School of Architecture, which is now located at the UTSA Downtown Campus. Only seven years old, the Downtown Campus serves nearly 6,000 students.
