Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Week offers films, lectures

(Oct. 6, 2003)--In conjunction with National Coming Out Day, Oct. 11, UTSA hosts Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Pride Week with a series of events over a two-week period from Oct. 6 to Oct. 16.

The UTSA 1604 Campus will kick off the celebration Oct. 6, showing "Paragraph 175," an award-winning documentary about the sodomy provision of the German penal code that sent 100,000 men to prison or concentration camps from 1933 to 1945. The film will be shown at 7 p.m. in the University Center Laurel Room (2.01.28).

In 2000, the film won the best-director award at the Sundance Film Festival and the best-documentary award at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Two displays, "10 Ways to be a GLBT Ally," and a family-tree interactive display, will be presented Tuesday through Thursday on the first floor of the University Center.

On Oct. 9, events on the 1604 Campus wrap up with a showing of the documentary, " The Times of Harvey Milk," about the first openly gay elected official, who was assassinated at San Francisco's city hall in 1978.  The movie, which won the 1985 Academy Award Winner for best feature documentary, will be shown at 7 p.m. in the University Center Pecan Room (2.01.26).

The University Center displays will move to the Downtown Campus Oct. 14, remaining in the Durango Building Student Activity Center through Oct. 16.

The two-week celebration will culminate in a lecture/discussion session, "Sexuality:  A New Glass Ceiling," from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 16 in the Frio Street Building Riklin Auditorium (1.406) at the Downtown Campus.

Speakers are Bibi Gutierrez, Martin Herrera, Yvonne Schilling and Christie Lee Littleton-Van de Putte of the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of San Antonio. A reception including refreshments will kick off activities at 6 p.m., followed by the lecture/discussion at 7:15 p.m.
