Advocate sings to encourage community service

(Oct. 24, 2003)--Singer and songwriter James Hersch will bring his musical REACH program to both the UTSA Downtown and 1604 campuses Oct. 28 and 29, respectively.

The Downtown Campus performance is scheduled for 10 a.m. Oct. 28 in the Buena Vista Street Building Meeting Assembly Room (1.338), while the 1604 Campus appearance Oct. 29 will be at 9 a.m. on the first floor of the University Center galleria. The performances are free and open to all.

Driven by his passion for learning through service to others, Hersch has become known as an advocate for community service. He travels the country teaching college students the value of community outreach by working with them to present concerts that create interaction between the students and their communities.

Following his UTSA performance, students will begin service projects around campus including helping at the Child Development Center, working on a campus cleanup and making blankets. Hersch looks to inspire community service and outreach programs through his music.

A musician, songwriter and educator, Hersch has appeared at a variety of venues across the country, telling stories in song. He holds a bachelor of arts degree in classical guitar and has recorded eight albums, including his latest compact disc of acoustic performances, "Back Tracks."

The Minnesota native has received multiple nominations for the National NACA Coffeehouse Entertainer of the Year award and has been a finalist at the international Kerrville Folk Festival.

In 1997, Hersch received the Harry Chapin Award for Contributions to Humanity from the National Association for Campus Activities for his work through the REACH program.
