"Deborah Paredez is an exciting new voice in poetry," said Wendy Barker, UTSA professor of English, classics and philosophy. "This is a chance to hear a dynamic performance by a gifted young writer at the start of what I'm sure will be a highly successful career."
Paredez' work has appeared in several anthologies of Latina writers including "Daughters of the Fifth Sun: A Collection of Latina Fiction and Poetry" and in a number of literary magazines.
She earned a Ph.D. in Latino theater from Northwestern University in 2002. Paredez taught at Trinity University, where she received her B.A. degree, and at Vassar College. She is currently an assistant professor of theater at UT Austin.
According to reviewer Julia Alvarez, "'This Side of Skin' is full of
poems that will get under your skin and work their magic. Her voice is smart,
full of surprises -- a blending of old myths with new meanings, Latina rhythms
and an American beat, Spanish and English."
